This is definitely the best recording of Widor's 5th Symphony on record. There are some highlights that set this recording above the others. There is a point at the end of the first movement in which the music builds up to one of the final displays of the theme (timestamp 7:27 on this recording), and I assure you the crescendo Chorzempa does is the best of any recorded. The adagio movement has great balance—the registration is just right, and the phrasing and dynamics make the music as beautiful as it was written to be. Chorzempa seems to understand very well Widor's music. The famous last movement does not disappoint with impressive use of registrations to fulfill Widor's demands with dynamics. It's the clearest toccata out there. Some people worry that the toccata is 5 minutes 43 seconds, but a toccata is supposed to be played fast. The trick is articulation. You could play it slowly and muddy up the textures too. But here, you can hear all the voices clearly; don't worry. I'll also say the St. Sernin organ has an awesome tutti.
Chorzempa says in the liner notes that the Romane symphony was put in the album because it is so rarely heard, which is too bad because after hearing it here I think it's my favorite symphony of Widor's. Certainly it's the most cohesive out of the lot. Chorzempa plays it beautifully. You really get the feel of this being a symphonic work with the registrations used. It's clearly idiomatic to the organ, but the work is so well structured. Some of the other symphonies people like to call "suites" because they're not super cohesive, but in this symphony the theme is used throughout masterfully. Personally, I would like to hear this work on an organ with not so bright voicing, but the way it's played here will probably never be surpassed.
Briefly about the 10th symphony: it begins with a mysterious aura of the Gregorian chant theme, slowly easing into the development throughout. The second movement is the choral, as stated in the title. There's a flutey middle section, and it finishes with recapitulation. The third movement is a lovely ode in minor key, evoking tragedy in a way…the oboe stop singing a sorrowful song. The fourth and final movement begins in a jovial fanfare, which gets development until halfway through the clouds open and the choral is played in all its majesty, the tutti of the St. Sernin organ again totally fulfilling. From here the work recapitulates to its mysterious beginnings, which really caps it off as a masterpiece.
Also, I will note here that the recording quality is fantastic—it's perfect—great clarity but you hear the reverb, and the dynamic range is fantastic. The full glory of Cavaillé-Coll's organ at St. Sernin organ is captured with great realism, which is truly a great feat. I would definitely recommend this album!
