Original Album Classics contains five albums by Cypress Hill: Cypress Hill (1991), Black Sunday (1993), Cypress Hill III: Temples of Boom (1995), Cypress Hill IV (1998), and Stoned Raiders (2001). That's the group's first four albums, plus its sixth – 2000's Skull & Bones was presumably left out because it's a two-disc album. For most casual fans, 2005's Greatest Hits from the Bong will be adequate, but this is a rather affordable way to obtain a major chunk of the group's catalog. The discs are presented as they were originally released, within standard jewel cases that slide inside a basic cardboard sleeve.

Andy Kellman, Allmusic.com

Cypress Hill were notable for being the first Latino hip-hop superstars, but they became notorious for their endorsement of marijuana, which actually isn't a trivial thing. Not only did the group campaign for its legalization, but their slow, rolling bass-and-drum loops pioneered a new, stoned funk that became extraordinary influential in '90s hip-hop – it could be heard in everything from Dr. Dre's G-funk to the chilly layers of English trip-hop. DJ Muggs crafted the sound, and B Real, with his pinched, nasal voice, was responsible for the rhetoric that made them famous. The pro-pot position became a little ridiculous over time, but there was no denying that the actual music had a strange, eerie power, particularly on the band's first two albums. Although B Real remained an effective lyricist and Muggs' musical skills did not diminish, the group's third album, Temples of Boom, was perceived by many critics as self-parodic, and the group appeared to disintegrate shortly afterward, though Muggs and B Real regrouped toward the end of the '90s to issue more material.

DVX, the original incarnation of Cypress Hill, formed in 1986 when Cuban-born brothers Sen Dog (born Senen Reyes, November 20, 1965) and Mellow Man Ace hooked up with fellow Los Angeles residents Muggs (born Lawrence Muggerud, January 28, 1968) and B Real (born Louis Freese, June 2, 1970). The group began pioneering a fusion of Latin and hip-hop slang, developing their own style by the time Mellow Man Ace left the group in 1988. Renaming themselves Cypress Hill after a local street, the group continued to perform around L.A., eventually signing with Ruffhouse/Columbia in 1991.

With its stoned beats, B Real's exaggerated nasal whine, and cartoonish violence, the group's eponymous debut became a sensation in early 1992, several months after its initial release. The singles "How I Could Just Kill a Man" and "The Phuncky Feel One" became underground hits, and the group's public pro-marijuana stance earned them many fans among the alternative rock community. Cypress Hill followed the album with Black Sunday in the summer of 1993, and while it sounded remarkably similar to the debut, it nevertheless became a hit, entering the album charts at number one and spawning the crossover hit "Insane in the Brain." With Black Sunday, Cypress Hill's audience became predominantly white, collegiate suburbanites, which caused them to lose some support in the hip-hop community. The group didn't help matters much in 1995, when they added a new member, drummer Bobo, and toured with the fifth Lollapalooza prior to the release of their third album, Temples of Boom. A darker, gloomier affair than their first two records, Temples of Boom was greeted with mixed reviews upon its fall 1995 release, and while it initially sold well, it failed to generate a genuine hit single. However, it did perform better on the R&B charts than it did on the pop charts.

Instead of capitalizing on their regained hip-hop credibility, Cypress Hill slowly fell apart. Sen Dog left in early 1996 and Muggs spent most of the year working on his solo album. Muggs Presents the Soul Assassins was released to overwhelmingly positive reviews in early 1997, leaving Cypress Hill's future in much doubt until the release of IV in 1998. Sen Dog had come back for the record. He had left because he felt he did not get enough mike time, but after a few years with a rock band he was more than happy to return. Two years later, the group released the double-disc set Skull & Bones, which featured a disc of hip-hop and a disc of their more rock-inspired material. Appropriately, the album also included rock and rap versions of the single "Superstar," bringing Cypress Hill's quest for credibility and crossover hits full circle. The ensuing videos for both versions featured many famous rap and rock musicians talking about their profession, and the song was a smash on MTV because of it. In the winter of 2001, the group came back with Stoned Raiders, another album to heavily incorporate rock music. Three years later, the band issued Till Death Do Us Part, which incorporated several styles of Jamaican music. In 2010 they announced their signing to Priority Records thanks to the label’s creative director, Snoop Dogg. The label released their eighth studio album, Rise Up, that same year.

Cypress Hill - Original Album Classics (2008) 5CD Box Set

Cypress Hill - Cypress Hill (1991)

It's hard enough to transform an entire musical genre – Cypress Hill's eponymous debut album revolutionized hip-hop in several respects. Although they weren't the first Latino rappers, nor the first to mix Spanish and English, they were the first to achieve a substantial following, thanks to their highly distinctive sound. Along with Beastie Boys and Public Enemy, Cypress Hill were also one of the first rap groups to bridge the gap with fans of both hard rock and alternative rock. And, most importantly, they created a sonic blueprint that would become one of the most widely copied in hip-hop. In keeping with their promarijuana stance, Cypress Hill intentionally crafted their music to sound stoned – lots of slow, lazy beats, fat bass, weird noises, and creepily distant-sounding samples. The surreal lyrical narratives were almost exclusively spun by B Real in a nasal, singsong, instantly recognizable delivery that only added to the music's hazy, evocative atmosphere; as a frontman, he could be funny, frightening, or just plain bizarre (again, kind of like the experience of being stoned). Whether he's taunting cops or singing nursery rhyme-like choruses about blasting holes in people with shotguns, B Real's blunted-gangsta posture is nearly always underpinned by a cartoonish sense of humor. It's never clear how serious the threats are, but that actually makes them all the more menacing. The sound and style of Cypress Hill was hugely influential, particularly on Dr. Dre's boundary-shattering 1992 blockbuster The Chronic; yet despite its legions of imitators, Cypress Hill still sounds fresh and original today, simply because few hip-hop artists can put its sound across with such force of personality or imagination.

Cypress Hill - Black Sunday (1993)

Black Sunday made Cypress Hill's connection to rock & roll more explicit, with its heavy metal-like artwork and noisier, more dissonant samples (including, naturally, stoner icons Black Sabbath). It's a slightly darker affair than its groundbreaking predecessor, with the threats of violence more urgent and the pot obsession played to the hilt (after all, it was a crucial part of their widespread appeal). Apart from those subtle distinctions, the sound of Black Sunday is pretty much the same as Cypress Hill, refining the group's innovations into an accessible bid for crossover success. In fact, it's a little startling how often Black Sunday recycles musical ideas and even lyrical catch phrases from the endlessly inventive debut. And the rock-derived, verse-chorus song structures start to sound a little formulaic by the end of the record (how many choruses feature Sen Dog repeating part of whatever B Real just said?). But in spite of that, Black Sunday still sounds vital and lively, since the group has a surer sense of craft. Most of the tracks are fleshed out into structured songs, in contrast to the brief sketches that punctuated Cypress Hill. The album benefits immensely from the resulting clutch of excellent singles (and songs that could have been), and while a couple of tracks feel redundant and underdeveloped, Black Sunday is overall a consistent, engaging listen, especially the flawless first half or so. Unfortunately, it's also the group's last great album, thanks to the musical recycling operation that began here and would handicap much of their subsequent work.

Cypress Hill - Original Album Classics (2008) 5CD Box Set

Cypress Hill - Cypress Hill III: Temples of Boom (1995)

Cypress Hill didn't exactly push themselves after they revolutionized hip-hop with their first album, 1991's Cypress Hill. Black Sunday, their 1993 follow-up, was a virtual reproduction of their debut, albeit with a harder stance and an increased pop sensibility. On Cypress Hill III: Temples of Boom, the group pushes forward somewhat, but with mixed results. Nothing on the album is as immediately catchy as "Insane in the Brain" or "How I Could Just Kill a Man," but Cypress Hill do open up their sound a bit, experimenting with jazz-inflected grooves, in particular, as well as soul. Even with the new musical flourishes, the essential core of the band's sound hasn't changed at all, which is slightly disappointing. Certainly, Cypress Hill III: Temples of Boom is an excellently produced record, filled with sonic details that most hip-hop records of the mid-'90s are missing, but the musical content frequently doesn't quite match the production skills. Cypress Hill manages to keep a consistent mood throughout the record, and several tracks showcase the trio at their best, but Cypress Hill III: Temples of Boom suggests that they are running out of things to say and ways to say them.

Cypress Hill - Original Album Classics (2008) 5CD Box Set

Cypress Hill - Cypress Hill IV (1998)

Near the end of "Cypress Hill IV," on the song called Clash of the titans, B-real lets it be known that there will be no more sleepin on the crew from the Killa Hill. Over a beat you could go to war with, B-Real spits out:

"Let the rain pour down from God above/With the blood on my blade, no love, begin the flood/ Open the gates, Let the battle begin, we're in/With the wind at our backs, ready for any attacks"

Beware the Hill.

That seems to be the underlying theme of the latest offering from Cypress Hill, "Cypress Hill IV" The beats are cinematic and moody, and B-Real sounds actually, well, threatening on a majority of the songs (well, as threatening as a nasal voice can sound) On top of that, Sen Dog is back for this album, and his game has stepped up a notch or two, actually shining on a couple cuts lyrically instead of just barking the choruses.

The first half of the album is definite satisfaction if you dug the first and second albums. "Eye of the Pig" is basically an audio version of the Harvey Keitel flick "Bad Lieutenant." But the jack is well done, as B-real evokes a mood of paranoia, fear and self loathing as a dirty cop on the beat. "Eye.." is followed up with "Checkmate." Sen Dog is heard muttering over the beginning, "Beware of the Dog, muthafuckas" and then the beat drops, pounding the shit outta you. Muggs brings back some late 1991, early '92 flavor with this track, hyper and uptempo. Sen comes off best on this track, lyrically, and you can't help but get a little juiced hearing him bellow "Checkmate, fool!" in the chorus.

"Riotstarter," and "Nothin to Lose" follow the same path as checkmate, agressive, fast songs, spiked with a touch of electric guitar here and there. Muggs comes close to resurrecting the aura of the early Bomb Squad on these cuts. "Tequila Sunrise," the albums first single, is a smooth little chunk of latin flave, got the horns on the chorus and everything. It sounds kinda like something Muggs produced up for Delinquent Habits then decided, "Nah, fuck that, we gonna keep this one."

And of course, there are the obligatory weed love songs, "Dr. Greenthumb," and "High Times," While "High Times," is lethargic and pretty blah blah, "Dr. Greenthumb" has a dusty beat, and a funny intro, complete with a crop growin redneck sayin lines like, "Now I don't gotta point my shotgun at no pesky porkers. Dr. Greenthumb, yer thuh sheeit" as you hear the tobacco juice drip down his double chin.

There's more guest spots on this album than the previous ones, following the latest trend of shoving as many guest MC's as possible on your album. (Make it stop! Make it stooooop!!) But these are (thankfully) limited to some youngbucks from the Cypress camp,(Barron Ricks and Chace Infinite) and one washed up G-rapper (MC Eiht).

Barron Ricks makes his first appearance on the slowtempo "Audio X" He and B-real kinda sound lke those other platinum potheads, you know, the ones from Cleveland, Ohio? B-Real even admits as much, saying, "Give me any record and I'll flip it any style" Barron sounds kinda like Prodigy from Mobb Deep, but with more of a battle tinge. It's cool at first, but he kinda wears himself out by doin the same shit on all the tracks he's present on.

Chace comes tight on "Feature Presentation," outshinin Barron and damn near runnin B-Real off his own cut as he rides Muggs' sinister beat (They're all pretty sinister sounding, actually) MC Eiht drops his verse over "Prelude to a Come Up" sounding more like his old self instead of doin that God-awful stop-start rhyme style he had adopted for his last two pathetic albums. This verse is actually adequate, and give me hope that I'll be hearin him sayin his trademark "Geeeeah" over some good shit soon.

The one track that raised my eyebrows a lil bit was "I Remember That Freak Bitch," The fonky ass beat had my head noddin, Barron was droppin some smart-ass lines that had me smilin' but hearin B-real rap about an old girlfriend aroused my curiosity. With lines like, "She wanted to be a star," and talkin about his girl "With the electric eyes," I was wonderin if he was talkin about a particular plastic barbie doll Baywatch bimbo. Hmmmm…Regardless, it's another pretty good cut.

There are a few missteps, however. "Steel Magnolias," and "Dead Men Tell no Tales" are pretty fuckin blah blah blah, and "Interlude pt. II" has an okay beat, but nothin but the usual complainin and bitchin (fuck you haters, you critics are bitches, quit bitin our shit) go on top of the beat. The second half of the album sags a bit, mired in a slowdown, but a enough one liners and little tweaks in the beat keep you interested enough to let the shit play on. But avoid the last cut entirely. "Lightning Strikes" is some bullshit techno/rock cut that goes absolutely nowhere, and is completely unredeemable. I'm guessing it's on there to appease Sen Dog's rock sensibilities, and to please the stoner kids who worship Cypress but like to throw a little Prodigy and Metallica into their mix. Even they probably ain't gonna dig this little nugget of shit.

Basically, Muggs is near the top of his game. The distorted vocals, the grainy, dusty, but thick ass beats set an angry and apprehensive mood. Muggs is still one of the most underrated producers in the industry, and he rarely fails at delivering dope shit(Checkout his "Soul Assasins" LP if you haven't already) And B-Real is at his best lyrically on this album, painting pictures in your weed clouded mind, or just telling you what the fuck is going on in his part of the Hill. Sen Dog is back with a vengeance, and Cypress is a better group for it. I know they ain't left, but I'm callin it a comeback. They came back to the raw shit they left behind on their debut and to a lesser extent, their second album. Load your bong and hit play.

Cypress Hill - Original Album Classics (2008) 5CD Box Set

Cypress Hill - Stoned Raiders (2001)

Ten years after the release of their first album, Cypress Hill have maintained a distinctive personality that has stuck around through several different musical directions. Never a band that has been afraid to experiment, the rock-rap sound they attempted on Skull & Bones is again one of the driving forces of the album. Where on that release they attempted to separate the tracks into the rap and rock sides, they just keep it all in the same mix here. Another huge difference between the two records is the quality of their rock-raps compared to their regular hip-hop sound. The biggest problem with Skull & Bones was that the rock songs were missing strong hooks, keeping them from being a successful blend of the two genres. But on Stoned Raiders, the rock songs are some of the strongest tracks. The best song on the entire album might be "Bitter," a brooding slow-burner that shows B Real laying down disjointed rhymes over shuffling jazz drums and strummed surf guitar. Other notable rock tracks include "Amplified," a Rage Against the Machine knockoff that features some subpar rhyming from Sen Dog but a catchy chorus, and the opener "Trouble," which utilizes Roni Size-esque percussion with trippy guitar courtesy of Fear Factory's Christian Olde Wolbers. The percussion is actually one of the standouts of the record; DJ Muggs and live drummer Bobo do a meticulous job of finding unique beats for the record. Unfortunately, many of the hip-hop tracks do not come near to the rock songs. There are a few exceptions, especially toward the beginning of the album. "Southland Killers" is a great duet between B Real and MC Ren; in fact, Ren contributes his best rhymes since N.W.A's Niggaz4life. And "Kronologik" is a spellbinding retelling of Cypress Hill's history that adds some clever insight into some of the notable events in their career. But many of the other rap songs simply do not have the beats or the choruses to keep them interesting, a problem that would seem unthinkable considering how incredibly unique and catchy their first two albums are. The biggest disappointment is "Red, Meth & B," a collaboration between Redman, Method Man, and B Real that has a fairly interesting beat but reveals a surprising lack of chemistry between the three. Overall, Stoned Raiders is a good album despite its varying quality, and should appeal to those who enjoyed their previous album's experiments with rock.
