Alexander Agricola (1446-1506) is little known outside the circle of "early music" connoisseurs, among whom he has cult stature as one of the most original and 'difficult' composers of the Burgundian/Franco-Flemish Renaissance. He was already a 'musician's composer' in his own lifetime, the subtlest exponent of the 'new' manner of composition that no longer assembled the lines of polyphony in ad hoc sequence from the 'tenor' outwards but instead conceived the music in toto from the start. A contemporary German musical theorist wrote: "Thus I observe … and with gratitude will highly praise that art: Ockeghem is correct and technically very well made; the same of LaRue; Josquin is intellectually sophisticated and subtle; Finck is also worth mentioning; concerning the unusual, crazy, strange manner of composition, how clearly Alexander (Agricola) is the leader in this style." Exalted company for a 15th C composer! And there's no question that Agricola's music is 'strange', replete with bizarre rhythmic intricacies, sounding only slightly like that of his 'master' Ockeghem and not at all like that of anyone else.
The surviving repertoire of Agricola's music includes the usual quota of polyphonic masses and motets (the finest recording of one of his masses is his "In Myne Zin" sung by Capilla Flamenca), an unusual wealth of distinctive chansons in several languages, and a unique treasure trove of pieces obviously intended for instrumental performance. Of the great 15th C composers, only Jacob Obrecht bequeathed us instrumentalists any non-vocal music comparable to Agricola's. This recording by the Ferrara Ensemble features nine of Agricola's extraordinary instrumental fantasies, played chiefly on lutes, harp, cittern, and violas da gamba, plus eight vocal chansons, some of them also involving instruments.
Lutenist Crawford Young is apparently also a closely guarded in-group treasure, although he has performed with the most virtuosic ensembles in the field of Renaissance and Medieval music and has taught for many years at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, the most prestigious conservatory of Early Music in the World. His artistry on pre-baroque lutes of various shapes and sizes is astounding; there's simply no one better. His flexible Ferrara Ensemble is equally the choice of the cognoscenti of Early Music; every one of their rare recordings is a perfect jewel, and yet the ensemble isn't well enough known and its recordings often become unavailable all too quickly. I'm thrilled to find that this 20-year-old CD has been re-released.
The ensemble for this recording included Crawford Young and Timo Peedu on lutes, Debra Gomez on harp, Randal Cook on vielle and viola da gamba – all top notch instrumentalists – with six singers including Contralto Susanne Norin and countertenor David Cordier. Some tracks also feature the Ensemble Este, a trio of violas da gamba associated with the Schola Cantorum.
Agricola's music is indescribable in words – witty, eccentric, elusive and allusive, and huge fun to play or sing, definitely a favorite when musicians get together to jam. Crawford Young and 'friends' obviously take delight in playing this repertoire, and you'll hear that delight in this recorded performance.
