“Too Cold” Collectors have been searching for the club blazing dance music album since 1981 when Cold Fire burst on the scene and disappeared just as quickly. Coming out of Vallejo, California, the Northern California hometown of Con Funk Shun and rapper E-40, Cold Fire was poised to break into the music scene with just as much of a splash.Track List
The band had a reputation as a tireless touring band, and scored a local single “Party Harty / Badder than Bad” that got the group some Bay Area radio play in 1977. Their original sound was more horn and guitar driven, but by 1981 the R&B standards had changed. When promoter Lewis Gray brought Cold Fire to Capitol Records’ Vice President of Artists and Repertoire Dr Cecil Hale, they were still a work in progress. So Dr. Hale, who was also the record’s producer, garnered his resources to bring such heavy hitters as keyboardist Patrice Rushen, drummer Leon “Ndugu” Chancler and bassist Nathan East into the recording process. As a result, while the songs were Cold Fire compositions, the tracks had a professional sheen that gave the band a unique sound. The youthful, playful party jams were packed into some ice cold rhythm grooves. At times the mix gives a feel like a teenager with the keys to daddy’s Ferrari. In other places the high powered tracks just leave you eating dust. What happened to Cold Fire was not uncommon with bands in the economically restricted business of 1980′s black popular music. With record companies unwilling to take too many risks with new artists, many bands started out with much of their studio work actually performed by veterans. Nevertheless, with lead vocals by Ray Towns jr, and a spirited youthful sound backed by the polished tracks, Dr. Hale and Cold Fire produced an unforgettable sound that is finally back in the mix.
