This programme is something of a memorial to Daniel Majeske who died from cancer in November 1993 after being Concert Master of the Cleveland Orchestra for 25 years. Christoph von Dohnanyi honours his memory in a written note, and Majeske's performance of Mozart's Sinfonia concertante, K364, recorded two years before his death, celebrates his searching, highly cultivated solo playing.
Majeske's character and finesse as a violinist (and Robert Vernon's sensitive viola playing) sing out of the slow movement. Before and after that the two soloists play with sinewy determination and rather more severely, even competitively, in order to cut through the rumbustious orchestral playing. The hefty chords which start the work and define its Allegro maestoso as a stately march (the horns wear very big boots indeed) typify Dohnanyi's sturdy, heavily rhythmic way with Mozart here.–Gramophone
