Chris Evans & David Hanselmann - Stonehenge (1980) [Reissue 1992]

This was a collaboration between English composer and producer Chris Evans (aka Christopher Evans-Ironside) and American-German singer David Hanselmann. Evans had already been involved in the field of Disco Music, while Hanselmann was a regular collaborator in German/Austrian groups, even if this came during their fading days, like Message, Triumvirat and Eela Craig. They appeared in 1980 with the album ''Stonehedge'', recorded at the Europa Sound Studios in Friedrichsdorf and the Star Studios in Hamburg, released on the WEA label, all orchestrations are credited to Evans, while Hanselmann provided lead vocals. The album features also drummer Dicky Tarrach, formerly of Brave New World, bassist Tissy Thiers, keyboardist Ludwig Rehberg and guitarists Juergen Schroeder, Reinhard Besser and Roy Louis, the later being a member of Passport.
Very much a product of its time, ''Stonehedge'' sounds like a succesful marriage between Electronic Music, New Wave, Synth Pop and Progressive Rock, containing long, cinematic ambiences, 80's synthetic beats and a nice lyrical depth. The tracks flow as a concept and start with some intense, orchestral soundscapes, reminiscent of Vangelis symphonic movements, before exploring the emerging stylings of the 80's with the plastic keyboards and the sampled grooves, but even these supposed annoying tunes are cleverly adapted in the music, flavored by clean voices, acoustic guitars and instant melodies. The more melodic tracks are recalling Alan Parson's Project at some point, while there are even some surprising Classical-inspired interludes played on synthesizers and sampled piano. About half of the pieces have a strong Pink Floyd atmosphere, characterized by the floating keyboards, the emotional vocals and the atmospheric changes between the acoustic textures and the moving, electric solos, while the more pronounced electric moves are a bit similar to what Steve Hackett was producing at the fall of the 70's. The final result is rather convincing, the tracks are quite cohesive with the different climates working well as a compact package, ranging from cinematic landscapes to catchy and memorable musicianship.
