"The Interchange" is orman's first solo record where he embraces his roots in folk and country-rock. There are lots of fingerpicked acoustic guitars in the style of early Bob Dylan.
The albums starts strongly with the title track, which features nothing but an acoustic guitar, a bit of synthesizer and vocals. In the second part of the song there are beautiful harmonies all sung by Chris Norman himself. The next song "Witch's Promise" is a bit more up tempo but still rooted in folk. "Hold On" is the first song that doesn't work as well as it should. The verses are really good with great acoustic guitar playing but the chorus is rather weak. On "Stay With Me Tonight" Norman follows the tradition of Smokie songs like "Lay back In The Arms Of Someone".
Three songs are written by Norman together with Pete Spencer who also plays drums on most of the tracks for the album; another folk-rock song "Mistral Moonlight", the great fast country influenced "Lucy Brown" and the only real rock song "Closer Josie" which is one of the highlights.
There are fours songs written by Tony Carey of which two don't fit that well together with the folky songs Chris Norman wrote for the album. They have been placed as the last two songs on the CD because they are more rooted in synthetic '80s pop. Especially "Valerie" is a great song, though that would have beneffitted from a production more in style with the rest of the material here.
The other two songs written by Carey - "Jenny Lee" and "A Beautiful World" - blend very well with the rest of the album. The two outside compositions "Shallow Waters" is another very good addition the album. "If You Need My Love Tonight" was the single.
