Cathy Jean is an American Blues singer, songwriter and musician known for her powerful and soulful vocals. She has collaborated with many well-known local and national musicians. She has released several EPs and full-length albums, and has toured in North America and abroad. Jean has been nominated for three Washington Area Music Association (WAMA) awards. Cathy plays guitar, piano, violin and harmonica.

Deep in the quagmire of mainstream pop culture, the blues continue to bubble, and it's purists such as vocalist Cathy Jean who keep the genre percolating. "Tear Me Apart" is a solid mixture of melancholy melodies, balls-to-the-walls blues rockers, and impassioned ballads. Recorded in what sounds like totally live-in-the-studio fashion (very few overdubs are detectable), Cathy Jean's debut twists and turns through a 14-song mountain of blues standards that would make the Swiss Alps envious. And yet, no matter who she borrows from, her voice is a beautiful instrument that serves her needs perfectly– soulful and soaring, sultry and sexy, and subtly vulnerable at just the right moments. More importantly (and more thoroughly than anyone who comes immediately to mind), CJ inserts her persona and preoccupations into these cover versions; and her takes on classic tracks such as "I'm A Man" (re-written from a female slant) and "One Good Man" makes the former her own and gives new life to the tepid latter. She makes "Who Do You Love" a moving, varied song, as opposed to the schlock electric blues George Thorogood squeezed a hit from. From the spirited, up tempo romp of "Hello Little Boy" to the temperature-rising torch of "Sweet Blood Call," right on through the busy organ and big vocal pyrotechnics of "Rollin' & Tumblin'," "Tear Me Apart" does a marvelous job raising blood pressure. And on the swaying "Baby Get Lost," she piques the libido with, "I got so many men they're standing in line." Hmmmm… where do I take a number? On "Tear Me Apart," this lady doesn't just sing the blues, she feels 'em. And when that voice works each end of her angelic register (and every note in between), you can't help but feel 'em right along with her. That Cathy Jean has absorbed the obvious influences the blues has to offer while escaping their cliches already says a great deal about how tough this woman is.

Judging the sexy cover shot on the CD may prejudice you from checking out the music inside. You can't judge the music by the hot and steamy pin-up poses alone. The music speaks volumes all by itself. Cathy Jean sings "the blues" with a "take-no-prisoners" attitude, singing of loves lost and loves found, life's hits and misses, not afraid to stomp on those that get in her way or taking on those who have done her wrong. A powerful collection that is simply smokin'!! Cathy Jean sings with an expressive, very melodic and powerful voice, more in common with Bessie Smith, Janis Joplin, or Aretha Franklin. Her vocal range is almost limitless– whether she is singing an all-out rocker like "I'm Your Girl", the jump blues of "Be Glad", or songs influenced by the soulfulness of Tina Turner and the incomparable Memphis Stax-Volt sounds, she has the power to draw you into each song and to have you, the listener, identify with and to feel all of the emotions being generated there. Her performance is a major tour-de-force! Along for support are the talents of Jon Carroll and Bengie Porecki on organ; Jerry Queen on sax; and Keith Stafford's ballsy guitar work. Quite an extraordinary team! Nighthawks Mark Wenner contributes his own special blues harp on the punches flying, foot stompin' cut, "Unfinished Business". Tracks to watch out for: "Why Don't You See Me", a touching and quite catchy tune penned by Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano; and, the last song on the CD, the hauntingly beautiful "Blues Psalm" which finds Cathy soulfully and reverently singing to a lonely saxophone. There is an emotional fervor with which she sings the prayer-like tune that cuts deep into your soul. With music this good it is hard to fathom why Cathy Jean and her bandmates aren't headlining more festivals or bombarding more clubs with greater frequency. This is extremely short-sighted on many peoples parts. "I Want" has an enormous amount of depth, heart, and a blistering sense of attitude. The music jumps from start to finish. If the big heels and the high-production fashion values have you skeptical about this lady, keep reading. Purring and snarling through “Your One And Only”, crowing danger through the tasty acoustic gem “Behind My Back”, double-daring her way through the buoyant “Purple Tattoos”, Cathy Jean has a natural gift for pairing her formidable voice with some pretty mean presence and solid song-writing (not a single cover on the entire CD). Blues fans will want to skip string-coated pop fare like “You Don’t Know”, but most of the rest is great stuff– seductive, tough and convincing, backed by a terrific group. Excellent and recommended.

If it hadn't been for accidently stumbling across Cathy Jean's last cd called "I Want" in the used bins,I would have never heard of this wonderful artist. I don't know how a blues singer with this much talent continues to fly under the radar screen. This latest album was a big surprise for me. Not that her last album wasn't very good too. It's just that she's made such a big leap both in her songwriting and her singing abilities. Not to mention the hot band she has backing her here. Where her last album was mainly blues oriented, here she expands on the blues theme and explores other styles like jazz, pop, and rock. Even on her blues tunes she adds a little something extra to each that makes these songs different. On the first song she opens with probably the most basic blues tune on the cd with "Your One And Only". But then on the next track "Kauai" she uses a full orchestra backing to great effect on this catchy straight ahead pop song that would probably be playing on the radio today if it wasn't for the prefab Brittany's and Christina's out there. This song really took me by surprise, and I knew I might be in for something special after this. Jump on down to track 4 with "The Kids From Glen Burnie" and I got surprised again by this 50's style jazz tune complete with a cool piano and trumpet sound and spooky lyrics about the horrors that await you in a haunted house on Marshall Road, which is the street this album is named after, that Cathy Jean wants to have destroyed. Her voice and instrumentation jibe perfect on this tune. "Austria" is another good blues song with a little different slant. This time with a cello added that gives it a kind of Middle Eastern flavor, but with Cathy Jean singing nothin' but the blues. "Strut" is the only full horn song, and it has a kind of funk feel to it with the use of guitar wah wah pedal added. The rest of the music here is pretty much blues rock oriented material, but with that little something added to make each song stand out from the rest. Cathy Jean's voice is really something special. I'm surprised none of the other reviewers here didn't mention how much she sounds like Ann Wilson of the band Heart. There's times I can't tell their two voices apart. Other than that similarity, Cathy Jean really stands out from the crowd. She's an amazing songwriter. Everything here she wrote. And in every song she has an interesting story to tell. Don't be fooled by the provocative cover. She's a blues Diva to the bone, and you can tell she takes her music serious. There's only a couple women in the blues world who I put in the same class. And that's Joanna Connor, who in my opinion is the best woman blues guitar player we have today. And Deborah Coleman, who is another outstanding blues singer/songwriter. I highly recommend this cd. It's a heck of a lot of fun to listen to, and a hard one to put down. One of the very best blues albums from 2001.

Cathy Jean’s “Little Sick Twist” takes some getting used to. Maybe it’s the sex-kitten pinup art that adorns her CDs and almost every page of liner notes, or maybe it’s because a couple of tunes sound like Chrissie Hynde or Patti Smith talking dirty (“Paint My Fence,” for example, or “Brunettes,” about a torrid lesbian encounter). Or maybe it’s the notion that someone so physically attractive shouldn’t have the blues in the first place. But when you listen to these 15 tunes, all but one of which bear Cathy Jean’s solo writing credit, you find two truths: One, her vocal prowess and lyrical phrasing are considerable, and two, if you listen long enough you’ll get what you need. Smoky blues numbers such as “Something Dark Approaching” appear alongside tracks such as “Slow Down,” a fiddle and banjo tune with its heart in Nashville, its gut in Memphis, and its nethers further south.

On the blues-rocking “Not Pretty,” the singer describes herself as tan and buff– until she reveals the psychic damage she’s endured and the neediness that compels her to beg the man she’s addressing to “come hang out with me.” “Happy Couple” uses the jump blues idiom to address a crumbling live-in relationship where the guy won’t pay half of the bills. “No More Pecking,” a piano bar blues featuring cornet, tells a story of sexual dysfunction in which the relationship has become one-sided, the man happier to be playing video games than tapping the narrator. Risky song subjects and the fine musicianship of the supporting players suggest that when Jean gets a wider audience, it’s going to be because, deep down, she’s all blues– postmodernist Betty Paige irony notwithstanding.

Despite the tragedy in her life this is a superb album. Derek Trucks said in an interview (this is a paraphrase) that not only is he interested in what someone is playing but what they are listening to. Clearly Cathy Jean and her band members are both very good listeners and very good players. They are very modern (notice the excellent use of strings) and one of the finest bands playing rock and roll and blues around today. This album and Sick Little Twist are both top notch!

With four CDs of Cathy Jean's in my collection, I've concluded she's one disturbed gal that does an incredible job of expressing it in her music. It often revolves around troubled relationships. She's somewhere between Lady Gaga, Ana Popovic, and Billie Holliday, if that's possible. Cathy Jean can play a mean guitar, have more lyrics in her songs than a novel, which tend to be pretty pointed and raw. What attracts me is the jazz influences intertwined with blues, funk, and rock. From her nude photos in the album sleeve and the high energy her music evokes, once you've been exposed to Cathy Jean, you won't forget her! Cathy Jean is one of the most innovative divas in the world of blues.

This one hit me like a rock. Cathy Jean is far from unknown to my ears so you would think that her confessional and confrontational rock chic – and I mean that in the nicest way – persona would have no more than a muted effect on me by now. However, and I should have suspected something given the striking cover art, she really let it rip this time with In the Remains being not so much an album as the sonic equivalent of a hand grenade. … very focused and consistent. It is a rock album, of course, but Lita Ford wouldn't go anywhere near as far as Cathy Jean has here. The impact isn't the guitars or the drums. It is in her voice. Her words drip alternately with acid, love, pain, indifference and contempt in the way of a proper soul singer. She's telling it like it is and even a guy can get that this time around. In musical terms, there is nothing to complain about. The supporting players do a solid job of providing the foundation for the car crash sentimentality that Cathy Jean possesses with Keith Stafford's guitar easily justifying its place in the spotlight. Of course, if this were a relentless attack on the ears then a fair amount of impact would be lost so it is all the more noticeable that it is the subtler moments such as were found in King Civilian that work best. Having said that, there is something for everyone here as the good old fashioned r&b of You Shuffle proves. The important thing to remember though is that this is not a trivial album. It is hard work to shock anyone these days. Ask Lady Gaga if you don't believe me. Likewise, wearing your heart on your sleeve and reflecting on the pain inflicting inadequacies of your better half is hardly earth shattering. The difference here is the sincerity and you can take every word sung here as having been written in Cathy Jean's own blood.
