After the complete recordings of the Bruckner Symphonies by Haitink with his Concertgebouw Orchestra (mid 60's - early 70's). This recording was made at the start of the digital era with the Wiener Philharmoniker, with whom he was later to record the 3rd, 5th and 8th Symphony. The recording series were halted (as was the Mahler-cycle with the Berliner Philharmoniker). This recording was later coupled with the recording of the 5th and released in a budget series. It is a very worthwhile recording.
