Below The Belt album by Boxer was released Sep 04, 2012 on the Esoteric label. Digitally remastered and expanded edition of the 1975 debut album by the legendary British band. Below The Belt music CDs Formed by vocalist Mike Patto and guitarist Ollie Halsall two years after the demise of cult heroes Patto, the line-up of the band was completed by bassist Keith Ellis (formerly with Van Der Graaf Generator, Juicy Lucy and Spooky Tooth) and drummer Tony Newman. Signing to Virgin Records in 1975, Boxer recorded their Below the Belt at The Manor Studio in Oxfordshire. Below The Belt songs Includes the bonus track 'Don't Wait', B-side of the band's first single. Below The Belt album The reissue features a booklet that fully restores all original album artwork with a new essay.

English rock from the classic period but overshadowed by the arrival of Punk.

Boxer were a Super(ish)group from the mid 70’s. They consisted of Mike Patto and Ollie Halsall from Patto along with Keith Ellis (ex Van Der Graaf, Juicy Lucy & Spooky Tooth) and Tony Newman (drummer for Jeff Beck & Kevin Ayers) and were noted for signing to Virgin and then recording the first album on the rebuilt Manor studio. They were also a kick-ass live band.

The cover of the first album ‘Below The Belt’ was considered too racy for the conservative record stores and people like WH Smith & Woolworth chose not to stock it, seriously damaging their potential sales.

The debut, ‘Below The Belt’ has all the trademarks of the period but these four guys had about 60 years experience between them and so the music is played to perfection and the sense of four ‘old rockers’ getting together for a good time fairly fizzes off the disc.

There are elements of early Progressive Rock (NOT Prog!) in the swirling keyboard sounds of Mike Patto and Ollie Halsall and Ollie’s guitar playing is rocking but with a sense of fun that stays on the ear.

Most of the numbers on the first album sound as though they were likely singles (the charts were king at the time) but you do get the feeling that the band would like to stretch out a little and develop some of the themes and there is also no single sound that you could put your finger on and say “Aha! Boxer” but the quality makes up for a lot of that. They stray a little into Pilot territory or even 10CC from time to time.

The second album was due for release in 1976 but withdrawn the same year – Punk again – and only got a proper release in ’79. The band were supplemented by Chris Stainton, Boz Burrell and Tim Hinkley for this set and the band seemed to have developed a harder sound, less single oriented and definitely rockier with opener ‘Hey Bulldog’ leading the way and ‘Rich Man’s Daughter’ played with style – again taking tips from 10CC.

As an album ‘Bloodletting’ seems a little more cohesive but neither album were given the chance, at the time, and they have been a little ignored by time. These excellent packages may well help get more interest in a classic band of the time.
