The 90's were not kind to 70's and 80's rock bands still striving to stay relevant. They were suddenly relegated to dinosaur status in the wake of grunge. Boston certainly fell into this category, and while the album debuted at an impressive #6 on the Billboard charts, leadoff single "I Need Your Love" came and went without much fanfare, and the record quickly slipped into obscurity. And it's too bad, because it really is a great album, in fact it's my second favorite Boston album right after their debut.

One of the biggest things seemingly working against it (and probably a big reason radio wouldn't touch it) was the absence of lead singer Brad Delp, who apparently was still placing his allegiance with Barry Goudreau in RTZ. But replacement Fran Cosmo is a more than adequate stand-in, and in fact his more airy voice brings a new freshness to the material.

There's really not a bad song on here, though "Livin' For You" is a rather bland ballad with a been-there-done-that feel to it. Ditto for "Walk On", a 12-minute four-part suite that's completely unnecessary as such, and is little more than a retread of "Smokin'" off the debut. Still, as retreads go, it's pretty good. Elsewhere you find the heavy rocker "Surrender To Me" (about the closest thing to metal Boston's ever done) and interesting mid-tempo rockers "What's Your Name", "Magdelane", and "We Can Make It".

What's funny is that "Third Stage" was essentially a 70's album that seemed hopelessly out of place when it was released in the middle of the heavily electronic 80's, and now in the 90's with rock music pulling back to more organic arrangements, Boston was releasing a heavily electronic 80's-sounding albums, replete with Linn drum pads and synths. Doesn't matter…in hindsight, it sounds great. If you like Boston, you won't be disappointed in this one.
