From Washington DC, Bobby Thurston originally started singing whilst still at high school. After graduating he landed a job with the US State Department. “I’ve been there thirteen years, ever since I left school and I have to stress that without that job to fall back on, none of what I'm doing now could have been possible,” he told Blues & Soul magazine at the time. “In fact, it was through the job that I first got started. One of the guys that I worked with when I first got started had a brother who was starting a group and they wanted me to act as a sort of roadie. Gradually I progressed into doing some background work and playing percussion - that was when we started the group Spectrum LTD. We’ve been together ever since, ten years in fact.” It was during one of his performances that he was approached by fellow DC natives and producers, Willie Lester and Rodney Brown. With a working relationship already established with the New York based Prelude Record label - having produced Sharon Redd’s “Can You Flandle It" debut for them - the duo signed Thurston to Prelude’s roster who were actively scouting for a male Sharon Redd. He debuted in 1980 with the “You Got What It Takes” album that included the huge crossover smash “Check Out The Groove” (UK #10) and the title-track R&B hit. It also included his revival of Billy Stewart’s '60s R&B and pop smash, “Sittin’ In The Park”. “I actually chose the song because my producers felt that as well as looking a little like Billy, I also sound something like him,” he recalled. “But it goes deeper than that with me because I always admired and respected the man's music.” A year later, whilst still holding down his day job with the Government run International Communications Agency, he delivered his follow-up set, "The Main Attraction”, which featured the popular single, “Very Last Drop”. Thurston continued his relationship with Lester & Brown, and following the demise of Prelude he recorded an album, "Sweetest Piece Of The Pie” for their own Mainline label, which included the single “Just Ask Me”. A UK release followed on the Hi Hut label in 1988.
