Compression is the first solo album by Billy Sheehan. William "Billy" Sheehan is an American bassist known for his work with Talas, Steve Vai, David Lee Roth, Mr. Big, Niacin, and The Winery Dogs. Sheehan has won the "Best Rock Bass Player" readers' poll from Guitar Player Magazine five times for his "lead bass" playing style. Sheehan's repertoire includes the use of chording, two-handed tapping, right-hand "three-finger picking" technique and controlled feedback.

Is it progressive rock? Is it hard rock/metal? Yes to both – this album combines those two genres into a musical stew that at times seems to call to mind Rush, but still carves out it's own niche in the garden of sounds. The rhythm section really seems to captivate and steal the show more than the rest of the group many times, but that is to be expected when you are talking about a project by bass legend Sheehan. Still, his bass playing is not the only strong link in that chain. The drumming on the album is stellar, although much of that is also his work – he does give the job to a couple of others on some songs, (most notably Terry Bozzio). Also, the vocal work really catches one's attention and puts in a strong showing. Again, that is another feather in Sheehan's cap, though, since he handles that chore as well. If you are a fan of hard rock that isn't limited to three chords, by all means, check this one out.

Billy Sheehan shone as the bassist for David Lee Roth and balladic rockers Mr. Big. Now solo and working with the equally talented likes of guitarist and former Roth bandmate Steve Vai and Missing Persons drummer Terry Bozzio, Sheehan shows the full breadth of his musical personality. Compression is mostly a true solo effort with Sheehan more than adeptly handling all instrumentation. Thankfully, though, it's never self-indulgent; Sheehan's songwriting and vocal chops are impressive. Fans of the progressive but melodic band King's X will dig Sheehan's fluid, flawless playing and memorable melodies and will find much to like in surprisingly commercial, bluesy songs like "Something's Gotta Give." This is a consistent and illustrious debut.
