Although Chess didn't bother to anthologize these sides into album form until the early '60s, this marvelous collection actually dates from 1953. Broonzy and Sam are both in great form here, sharing the vocals throughout and recalling their earlier days as Bluebird label and session mates. The sound is fleshed out by the addition of guitarist Lee Cooper (who at times almost sounds a bit too modern for the genre being explored here, throwing in what can only be described as Chuck Berry licks) and Big Crawford on upright bass.Review by Cub Koda, Allmusic.com
As weird as it may sound, this was my very first introduction to Big Bill Broonzy's music. I originally got it from a Portuguese cassette blues compilation I found in a bargain bin in a record store in Brazil in 1995. This is probably the most unusual set of recordings by Big Bill, in that he didn't play lead guitar in these sessions himself. This duty was given to an obscure but rather brilliant guitarist named Lee Cooper (full name Echford Lee Cooper). You can hear Big Bill's acoustic guitar playing rhythm in the background, but he a stepped back to allow the other musicians (including the bassist Big Crawford and Washboard Sam) to shine through. The sound is electric and the sound quality is very good, considering it was recorded in 1953. This is NOT the album to get started on Big Bill Broonzy's music, BUT if you are an electric guitar enthusiast then I would URGE you to get it, because Lee Cooper's guitar lines and solos are outstanding, beautiful, energetic and predicted rockabilly and rock'n'roll for a few years. In addition to that, Big Bill's voice is very clear on the first half of the play on which he sings lead.
