Bernward Koch - Studio Albums Collection 1989-2017 (13CD)

Bernward Koch was born in January 1957 in Siegen/Westfalen, Germany. When he was 12 years, he started playing French Horn in the musical brass band of his village Wenden-Huensborn, but just a little bit later he changed to the trumpet “to be able to play more melodies”. Two years after he starts to be engaged in bass, guitar and drums. During that time he was playing in a beat-band. When he was 15 his father, an accordeon player, donated him a piano and he got his first piano lessons, but starts right now with improvisations and compositions, too.

His enthusiasm for music grew, especially for Jazz, Rock, Pop and Folk but also for classical music. In his early 20s he started studying at the music-university in cologne, meanwhile he took part (mostly together with his younger brother Christoph) in a lot of music seminars at the University of Bremen, Academy Remscheid and Schloß Weikersheim, e.g. teaching at Prof. Sigi Busch. In the meantime he played keyboards, drums and percussion in different Jazz-Rock-Bands. In 1990 for example an adventurous tournee led him and his Band The Brothers (= Pablo) to Moscow.

Besides Bernward Koch created piano-based instrumental-compositions -enriched with keyboards, flute, guitar and percussion- with a relaxing, metaphorical character and his discernible tuneful signature. 1989 he signed his first deal for an instrumetal solo-project under his own name.

With his debut-record “FLOWING” Bernward Koch has had a successful installation in the United States in 1990, when the important california radio stations THE WAVE and KKSF distinguished and popularized the record of the commonly unknown german pianist.

Koch`s fame began to ascend when his song “Ever returning” was chosen for two Aids-benefit-compilations
-chairman Elisabeth Taylor- initiated by the radio stations KKSF in San Francisco and THE WAVE in Los Angeles. He contributed his track besides artists like Sting (Fragile), Bonnie Raitt (Nick of time), Al Jarreau (One way), Eurhythmics Dave A. Stewart + Candy Dulfer (Lily was here), Ottmar Liebert (Heart still beating), Lauren Wood (Fallen, from the motion picture Pretty Woman), Bob James/David Sanborn (Maputo), Dave Grusin/Lee Ritenouer (Early a.m. attitude) and YANNI (Once upon a time).

In 1992 an important step in his career followed. His record “LAGUNA DE LA VERA” stayed high in the american Billboard New Age charts for a couple of months. Simultaneously it became one of the most highly acclaimed instrumental records of the year in various other countries.

His 1995 published album “STILL MAGIC” was moving upwards as well in the USA as in Europe. UNITED AIRLINES, JAPAN AIRLINES, Deutsche LUFTHANSA, KOREAN AIRLINES, SINGAPORE AIRLINES, AIR CHINA and many more airlines uses his music during the flights all around the world.

The album “PICANTE” came out in 1997 performed by Bernward Koch featuring Pablo (previously called The Brothers). This vivacious CD - a mixture of Latin, Jazz and Funk - documents the brilliant concert acting of the musicians; not only a melodical impressive but also rhythmical amazingly LP.

In 1997 the US-record company Real Music (from Sausalito near San Francisco) re-released Koch’s first album “FLOWING”. This record with a new blue cover was and is very successful again, not only in the USA.

In the summer of 1999 his production “JOURNEY TO THE HEART” was worldwide published by the california-based label. Each song demonstrates Bernward Kochs faculty for melody and harmony, so this record became a heavy airplay in Asia too.
“WALKING THROUGH CLOUDS” was the next successful record under that california-based label, a timeless album, with 16 tracks and one hour very suitable for yoga, meditation, calming.

In 2008 a new album of Bernward Koch was released. This live piano solo record be called “MONTAGNOLA” and is dedicated to the writer Hermann Hesse. It won the “Piano-Heaven” award in England and became the “Audio highlight of the month” of the German STEREO journal, Sept. ’09.

The currently record is called “GENTLE SPIRIT”, released in summer 2009 again in California. Bernward composed as always all tracks and plays the most instruments (piano, keyboards, guitar and bass), enriched with flute and percussion.

Also you hear his music in movies: e.g. in SHANIKO, the title of an award-winning motion picture of 2008. His composition “Childhood Hour” from the “WALKING THROUGH CLOUDS” record is sounding. Shaniko is concurrent the name of a ghost town in Oregon where the movie was shooting.

Nobody, who knows Koch`s music, will be surprised by his success: the artist composes pieces of outstanding formal maturity with an astonishing musical finesse. For Bernward Koch himself music means telling stories.

His piano-based arrangements are always marked by a tasteful balance of natural and synthetic sounds, mixed with the organic pulse of a real flesh and blood percussionist and guitar player (Bernward`s brother Christoph); and the exqusite flute playing of his wife Christiane Böhm has over the years become a trademark feature in his sound.

Bernward Kochs music unfolds a soothing and seductive charm - so by degrees there are and there will be many listerners under its spell.

This blending of classical European music forms with jazz improvisation and percussion is entertaining and refreshing. The accent is on the sound of acoustic piano woven with tasteful sounds of electronic keyboard and flute accompaniment.

Koch's debut, "Flowing," was a WAVE-Radio hit, with much popularity generated by the airplay of "Ever Returning" and "Dancing Atoms." His new Laguna de la Vera shows the same mastery of discreet melodies which seem familiar at first listen. Positive, bright and romantic, Koch plays nearly all the instruments, and his ever-present piano touch seldom misses the mark. The flute parts by Christiane Bohm and drums by Christoph Koch add just the right support. The feel is rather cinematic, gentle and rarely imposing, as the 14 tracks on Laguna de la Vera wander through a variety of romantic themes.

Still Magic" is an album by an artist, who has experienced a most astonishing rise within the New Instrumental Music scene during last couple of years. With his 1990 album "Flowing" Bernward Koch had a very successful debut, both in Europe and the United States, where the influential radio station "The Wave" popularized the work of the then completely unknown German keyboardist via power rotation. Bernward Koch's fame began to transcend the New Instrumental Music community, when in 1991 the artist (among greats such as Pat Metheny, Suzanne Vega, Enja or Sting) contributed a track to the compilation "Wave Aid", a benefit for a charity initiated by the Liz Taylor Foundation. Bernward Koch's final breakthrough came in 1992, when his second album "Laguna de la Vera" stayed high in the Billboard New Age charts for a couple of months. Simultaneously it became one of the most highly acclaimed instrumental records of the year in various other countries. Today Bernward Koch is considering by many as one of the genre's leading new artists.

Nobody, who knows Koch's music, will be surprised by his success: the classically trained artist composes pieces of outstanding formal maturity with an astonishing musical finesse. Koch himself calls his compositions "songs without lyrics" - and ideed they are delicately crafted and clearly show their creators sense of form.

Koch's arrangements are always marked by a tasteful balance of synthetic and natural sounds. The organic pulse of a real, flesh and blood drummer is essential for Koch's music, and the exquisite flute playing of his wife Christiane Böhm has over the years become a trademark feature of his sound. On "Still Magic" the music of Bernward Koch more than ever unfolds an unobtrusive but seducitve charm - and once again many listeners on both sides of the Atlantic will soon be under its spell.

Bernward Koch & Pablo - the double identity of an internationally renownend instrumental music champion. With his solo albums "Flowing", "Laguna de la vera", "Still Magic", "Journey to the Heart" and "Walking Through Clouds" the German keyboardist and composer has won himself an established position in the world of New Age. Especially in the United States, where his records reached high positions in the BILLBOARD Charts. Also in the U.S. his tracks were chosen for important charity compilations (among songs of Pat Metheny, Suzanne Vega, Enja or Sting).

The secret behind these successes is certainly Koch's stunning ability to create beautiful, catchy melodies. That he is also a master when it comes down to rhythmical matters, can be heard on "Picante", the debut album of Pablo. Koch has founded this band in the Mid-Eighties and it has been his continuous side project for him ever since. The group consists of Koch, his brother Christoph on drums, his wife Christiane on flute, Michael Hunold on guitar, Markus Schroeder on bass and Philipp Schneider on percussion.

After a couple of national awards, numerous tv- and radio-gigs, and some national and international tours (one of them led them to Moscow in 1990) they have concocted a tasty and spicy menu with latin-, rock-, funk- and jazz-ingredients for their first album.

Real Music is one of the few labels left that really delivers music designed to relax in the best of the new age tradition. This veteran German composer and keyboardist doesn't do anything too fancy here – he just creates caressing ambiences and soft and dreamy piano melodies that he enhances with the occasional bass, guitar, and glockenspiel. Christoph Koch brings a playful folk element to "Following Stars" and the graceful, symphonic "Simply Great" with a gentle acoustic guitar, and "Christiane Boehm" chimes in every so often on flute. Although there is a free-floating element to the atmospheres Koch creates, most of the 16 tracks clock in like tightly structured pop tunes, and the melodies – and their innocent charm – seem to get more captivating as they go along. In a world so cynical, it's wonderful that people can take a CD cover of clouds and butterflies not only seriously, but also as an opening to a seriously joyful musical remedy.

"Montagnola: Dedicated to Hermann Hesse" is a very different album from German pianist/composer Bernward Koch, known in the US primarily for his light and beautiful releases on the Real Music label. The primary difference with "Montagnola" is that it is improvised solo piano. Hermann Hesse (1877-1962) is the most widely-read German-speaking author of the 20th century, and Koch has been an avid reader of his works since childhood. Montagnola is the place where Hesse retreated to make a fresh start in 1919 after a life crisis caused by WWI and is where he wrote some of his best-known works. The dedication of this album to Hesse is to be understood to be a symbolic fresh start, a meditation, and an inner retreat, following Hesse's motto, "Be yourself." The music ranges from very delicate and serene to bolder and more experimental. To understand Koch's approach to this music, I quote from the interview he did with Stephen Cairns for the Piano-Heaven website: "I sat at the piano without any ideas. It was a risk, but one that I felt I should take, like a live concert in a wonderful atmosphere. The recording room was the Ratssaal at the town hall in Wenden, NRW. There is a very pleasant sound in this cherrywood boarded room with a nice view of a green valley. Only the recording engineer (Sebastian Meyer) and I were in the whole building, so we had the right silence and the best ambience to get my full concentration with the keys, to channel the music."

"Montagnola" begins with "Thank You For Your Love," a warm, gentle love song that overflows with grace and tenderness. The title track is understated and very dreamy, expressing an overwhelming hope and desire for peace - gorgeous! "Dream" is also a quiet, heartfelt beauty that comes from very deep within - a favorite. "Little Ark" is another favorite, dreamy and serene, taking us away from our worries. "Playing Children" is one of two tracks that are shorter than a minute - perfect in their brevity. "Longing" is almost mournful in its deep emotion. "Maulbronn" refers to a monastery that was built during the Middle Ages in the town of the same name. Dark and imposing, it only hints at its many stories. "Snow Is Coming" is very different. During the recording session, Koch looked out the window and saw snow blowing down from the hills. Within seconds, the air was filled with snowflakes causing the piano keys to dance along with them. "Black and White" is a lovely ballad of light and shadow - like the keys on the piano. "A New Life" closes this beautiful album true to Hesse's motto: "Be yourself."

"Montagnola: Dedicated to Hermann Hesse" is a must for Bernward Koch's many world-wide fans. Strongly recommended!

"Gentle Spirit" is the perfect title for this latest release from German composer/pianist Bernward Koch. Silken melodies float on soft languid tones, soothing the mind and easing away the cares of the day. A few of the fifteen tracks have strong but quiet rhythms, while others are more ethereal. Koch appears on piano, keyboards, guitar, bass, glockenspiel, and programming. He is joined by his wife, Christiane Boehm, on flute, and his brother, Christoph, on percussion, making this is an elegant family project. There are places on this record that remind me strongly of label-mate Kevin Kern - never a bad thing, by any means! I just hope that the Real Music signature sound doesn't become so homogenized that one artist is indistinguishable from the others. The production quality on this album is incredible, as it always is with Real Music releases.

"Gentle Spirit" begins with "The Treasure," a breezy piece for piano, light percussion, and keyboards that sets the serene tone of the album. If it's possible, "Immortal Thoughts" is even more soothing. As the title suggests, it is reflective and dreamy, seducing the listener into a peaceful state of mind. I really like "Get Free," which picks up the rhythm a bit and offers a poignant, bittersweet melody. "Fragrant Way" also has a compelling rhythm along with a touch of exotic spice - lovely! "Under Trees" has the lazy pace of an afternoon daydream. Flute and organ add some contrasting colors that really work. "An Ancient Dance" is a surprising guitar solo that fits in better than you might expect. Elegant and graceful, it harkens back to less stressful and complicated times. "Back To Myself" is another favorite. More improvised and free, it is both mysterious and reflective with a slightly agitated edge. "A Little Ode" shimmers with grace and solitude. "Multi-Colored Windows" has a magical tranquility and a gentle sparkle. "A Shimmer of Leaves" ends the album with a message of hope and peace.

"Silent Star" is Bernward Koch's fifth release on the Real Music label and his ninth album to date. Koch's longtime fans from around the world will be thrilled with the gentle, beautiful music they have come to love and expect from this German multi-instrumentalist and composer; if you are new to his music, it's a wonderful introduction. The music was inspired by and is dedicated to Otto Lilienthal (1848-1896), the "father of flight" and an inventor Koch has admired since childhood. Koch composed and recorded the pieces during a very creative period last fall. He wrote thirty tracks and selected fourteen for the album. He also played all of the instruments this time: piano, keyboards, synthesizer, guitar, bass, cymbals, percussion, and programming. Most of the music is very open, free, melodic and soothing, plus a few tracks that are more upbeat and lively - a nice combination. Although the album features a variety of musical instruments, the music is definitely piano-based with the other instrumentation adding washes of color and enhancing the moods.

"Silent Star" begins with "The New Day," a warm and welcoming piece full of promise and grace. "Softly Awakening" has a more classical style, with steady chords on the left hand and a simple, heartfelt melody on the right; piano and strings create musical magic. "She" is a bit livelier, but just as gentle and sweet - a favorite. "Distant Memories" changes the mood with accordion and bagpipe-like droning sounds telling a different aspect of the story. The middle of the piece is more ethereal, and then the bolder first theme returns and closes the piece. The title track is gorgeous. Atmospheric sounds, strings, and angelic voices suggest vast open space while the hypnotic piano melody soothes and relaxes - love it! "Cafe Noir" picks up the tempo a bit and adds a little more orchestration. Flowing with a gentle sparkle, it evokes feelings of effortless floating through space. "Vision Emerging" is another favorite. I love the magical feeling of freely moving from star to star, savoring the wonder of it all. "Harmony Found" is joyful and innocent with a light touch and faster pace. "The Color of Spring" is soft pastel colors and easy contentment. "Anthem" is my favorite. It begins as a piano solo, adding strings, voices and other keyboard sounds as it gracefully evolves. "Ice Flowers" delivers a chill. The reverb on the keyboard conveys the feeling of being lost and alone, but as the piece unfolds, it becomes warmer and less desolate. "Remember Blue" is a surprise. An upbeat Latin-style rhythm gives it a pop flavor and is likely the most radio-friendly piece in the collection. Warm, energetic, and very catchy, it's a delight! "Shades of Rain" closes the album on a more subdued note. Slow, graceful and kind of melancholy, it's a lovely way to end our journey. It's a beauty, so check it out!

DAY OF LIFE is Bernward Koch's sixth album of soothing, silky-smooth instrumental music on the Real Music label. The thirteen original pieces are mostly piano/keyboard-based and evoke images of a perfect day. Warm, dreamy, and very relaxing, this could very well be my favorite of Koch's albums. Not quite a solo effort, Koch's wife, Christiane Bohm, appears on flute and piccolo on several tracks; and Christoph Koch, Annina Struve, and Johannes Anders play various hand percussion instruments on the closing track. As would be expected of a major Real Music release, this is ideal music for massage, meditation, relaxing, studying, or simply a private musical retreat to a place of peace, beauty, and utter contentment.

Day Of Life begins with ''The Enchanted Path,'' a piece overflowing with grace, calm, and just a hint of magic. Bohm's ethereal flute is perfect, adding a breath of springtime. ''The Blue Light'' is as warm and gentle as a whisper, effortlessly soothing stress and cares away - sigh! I absolutely love ''Lonely Road'' with its poignant, melancholy mood of reflection. Piano, keyboards, and atmospheric sounds paint a picture in delicate shades of blue and purple - another sigh! ''Flowers On the Mountain'' is more ambient with warm, pastel colors, and an easy flow. ''Irish Sun'' is my other favorite. The bittersweet melody has the simplicity of a music box, but the misty washes of sound behind it give it dimension and weight. Bohm appears this time on piccolo, again a perfect fit for the piece. It's amazing how a simple song can convey such intense emotion. Love it! The title track has a slow, rubato waltz rhythm and is as serene as a nap in a grassy meadow. ''Passing Clouds'' could be a lovely lullaby for a child of any age - sweetness and innocence set to music. I also really love ''Journey to the Sea,'' one of the longer pieces. The gently rocking rhythm suggests the peaceful ebb and flow of a very calm ocean, perhaps at sunset. Delicate bells make me think of sparkles of sunshine dancing on the water - another favorite for sure! ''Behind the Mountains'' returns to a more ambient sound that would be wonderful in a movie soundtrack. Conveying the majesty of a mountain range and a curiosity about what lies beyond it, it s a gorgeous ending to a terrific album.

I have enjoyed all of Bernward Koch's albums, but I think DAY OF LIFE is his most expressive and evocative work to date. Very highly recommended!

"Touched By Love" is the eighth album from German pianist/composer Bernward Koch on the Real Music label. The album contains fifteen selections from Koch’s previous releases plus two new pieces - a whopping seventeen tracks and 75 minutes of blissful music! There are four tracks from "Walking Through Clouds" (2006), two each from "Journey to the Heart" (1999), "Gentle Spirit" (2009), "Silent Star" (2011), "Day of Life" (2013), and "Remembering" (2015), and one from "Flowing" (1997), Koch’s Real Music debut. His music has also been included on many of Real Music’s compilation albums. Koch’s signature sound is distinctive and his music has become a mainstay in the new age music genre as well as on the Real Music label. It tends to be very gentle and dreamy and lends itself beautifully to relaxation, spas, meditation, quiet life moments, and anytime you want music that is soothing and uplifting. Koch is best-known as a pianist and keyboard player, but he also appears on this album playing synthesizer, guitar, bass guitar, cymbals, claves, gongs, and glockenspiel. His wife, Christiane Boehm appears regularly playing flute - also part of Koch’s distinctive sound - and his brother, Christoph plays 12-string guitar, percussion, and drums.

Koch is a classically-trained musician and because his music is so peaceful and easy to listen to, his albums flow effortlessly from one song to the next without any jarring transitions. If you are looking for an hour and a quarter of musical heaven, "Touched By Love" is a sure thing.

The first of the two new pieces is “Memories of a Cherry Tree.” The sublimely simple keyboard/piano melody comes from the heart, enhanced by washes of strings and sparkling bells. Poignant and bittersweet, this is sure to become a Bernward Koch classic. The second new piece, “Hope,” is equally affecting and is somewhat more orchestrated. Delicate and gently-flowing, the soulful piano/keyboard melody floats above the strings and other instrumentation. Sigh… If you already have all of Bernward Koch’s earlier albums, at least check out these two compositions!

German composer and multi-instrumentalist Bernward Koch is one of the most enduring artists in the New Age genre. A classically-trained musician, he signed his first deal for an instrumental project under his own name in 1989. His debut album, Flowing, was released in the US in 1990, and several albums of a jazzier nature followed. In 1997, Koch signed with the San Francisco Bay Area based record label, Real Music, and they re-released Flowing that same year. Many albums later (Filled with Light is his ninth release for Real Music, plus many compilations), Koch's distinctive keyboard/piano/flute sound continues to delight listeners looking for music for relaxation, stress relief and to lift the spirit. The warm, delicate charm of Koch's music is a constant in all of his releases and is something his fans have come to rely on. Filled with Light is a collection of twelve original pieces. Koch performs on piano, keyboards, synthesizer, guitar, bass, glockenspiel and cymbals. Koch's wife, Christiane Bohm, often adds her grace to the music with her beautiful flute playing. Christoph Koch, Koch's brother, plays 12-string guitar, cajon, drums, percussion, and bells. Filled with Light begins with ''Summer Anthem,'' a very gentle piece with a simple piano melody and pastel washes of synth strings - a lovely start! ''Crystal Light'' seems to give a nod to the immortal J.S. Bach with keyboard, various instrumental sounds, and ethereal choir voices - heavenly. ''Free'' feels the way I imagine floating on a fluffy white cloud would feel like, gently drifting in a clear blue sky. ''Provence'' is a beautiful duet for piano and flute - poignant and a bit haunting, it's a favorite. I don't like heights, but I love the serenity of ''Treetop Glide'' and the warm, cozy blanket of sound it provides. ''Elfin Dance'' is by far my favorite piece on the album. Darker and more mysterious, it's a slow minor-key waltz for piano, keyboard, flute, guitar and glockenspiel. Love it! ''Quiet Day'' returns to a very peaceful mode with piano and strings soothing the soul. ''Tidal Flow'' is another favorite with its compelling rhythms, guitar, keyboard and bass. This one also has a slightly mysterious feeling and is absolutely gorgeous! ''Underwater Sunbeams'' expresses the heavenly beauty of light making its way into the water. Very ethereal with occasional bright sparkles, it's a wonderful way to end this magical album. Longtime fans of Bernward Koch's music will find much to enjoy in Filled with Light. And if you are not yet familiar with his music, this is a great place to start.
