Franz Danzi was not the creator of the wind quintet, which emerged out of various earlier forms of wind ensemble music and was crystallized by Beethoven Antoine Reicha. Danzi, an Italian-born associate of both Mozart and Beethoven, was inspired to take up the genre by the works of Reicha, which are a lot more Beethovenian in their harmonies and in their general level of seriousness. The nine wind quintets and three quintets for piano and winds recorded here are, in the main, genial and gentle works. They were composed in the early 1820s. Modest in reach, they are also beautifully crafted in every detail, and their rich textures are claimed by annotator Per Skans to have exerted an influence on Romantic orchestral wind writing. They are, quite simply, pleasant to listen to, and never dull.
It would be hard to imagine better interpreters of the music than the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet, which has both the technical means and the patient attitude to uncover the elegant touches in the inner voices of Danzi's wind scoring, and BIS' sound is up to its usual high standards. If the label is trying to uncover the lost virtuoso arts of the Romantic era, it has indeed done so in a way with this set.–James Manheim
