In many ways Ma Vlast seems like a problematic work. It is full of patriotism and conductors often choose to exploit its grandeur. Such approaches bring a risk of heaviness. Nikolaus Harnoncourt managed to employ slow tempi and achieve a deeper look without a trace of ponderousness, but his feat was remarkable and difficult to emulate. (Harnoncourt takes 83 minutes compared to 73 for Smetacek, a huge difference.) So Smetacek's decision to go for abandon and delight seems wise. The Czech Phil adds volumes to the treat, with a warm, juicy tone that is almost as enjoyable in this repertoire as the Vienna Phil. In addition, Supraphon's sound is splendid, about as good as early digital gets.

I don't want anyone to think Smetacek comes close to rushing. He's energized, exhibiting momentum that I'm yet to hear equaled, but nothing sounds glib. His phrasing is infiltrated with tender touches. His joy is infectious, speaking of cloudless skies. He doesn't strip away Smetana's varnish of grand feelings, but we feel we are experiencing Bohemian pride firsthand, instead of paying tribute to a monument. The effect is tantalizing, presenting the perfect solution to all the challenges of the work. Such exuberance keeps us in rapt attention, keeping us from feeling that the work drags on, as it does when the interpreter isn't compelling.

I'm pleased to give my highest praise to this neglected disc, which goes straight to the top of my list with Harnoncourt. I hope others will be thrilled by their discovery as much as I was.
