    Garage Rock, Psychedelic Rock

should preface that I might be partial to any work by Beauregarde–- he was one of the heels who wrestled at the first pro wrestling show I attended when I was a kid over thirty years ago. He got disqualified for strangling Kim Duk with his belt, making my buddies and I glad his evil-doing was thwarted by the referee. Beauregarde, the quintessential pro, sold it beautifully, acting devastated over such a minor loss.

Fast forward ten years, and a friend of mine shows me the artwork of the LP that Beauregarde released in the mid 1970s. I'm told there's a slim chance of finding the LP itself, as it had a brief run in the Pacific Northwest, and faded into obscurity. I figure that it's one missed memorabilia opportunity, and eventually allow it to fade from the vast pop-memorabilia memory bank in my mind.

So imagine my surprise when I check onto The Wrestling Observer website recently and find that the album is back in circulation. I ordered it right away, determined not to let the CD reissue evade me like the LP did. I have heard some great novelty music by wrestlers like Freddie Blassie (who sang "Pencil Neck Geek" penned by Johnny Legend) or Adrian Street ("Mighty Big Girl" and "I'm Only Happy Breaking Bones"); and I've heard some lukewarm serious attempts at music by wrestlers (Jimmy Valiant, Michael Hayes, or Hulk Hogan, anyone?). So I came across yet a few more surprises when I listened to this CD for the first time.

I was initially stunned to hear how good the opening track, "I Got Something" sounded, and double-stunned as I perused the jewel case info to see that Greg Sage, before his Northwest glory days began, played lead guitar on this album. To top things off, the lyrics of "I Got Something" brought back memories of the great interviews Beauregarde cut during his brief run in Los Angeles in '73. He's not trying to wax poetic in this tune, but also not merely mimicking tired old pop lyrics. Throw in that the music itself is incredibly progressive for its day, and you will find that Beauregarde –-as a wrestler turned musician–- was actually way ahead of his time.

I won't go as far to say that Beauregarde's lyrics ring of Mick Jagger or Leonard Cohen, but for a first project, Beauregarde wrote some colorful tales that fall somewhere in between his bad-boy wrestling persona and despairing blues-boy. I have no idea whether Beauregarde intended this album to be a one shot deal or not, but I can't help but wonder what he would have eventually cooked up if he continued scribbling away in the prose department.

The only criticism I have of this release is that I would have liked to see something more in the way of liner notes, especially after clicking onto Greg Sage's website. Sage devotes a whole section to Beauregarde on his site, and writes about his days playing guitar for him. He illustrates how Beauregarde operated as a heel in front of rabid Portland wrestling fans, and how even-tempered and down-to-earth he was in the recording studio. I guess it's unlikely that there will another reissue of "Beauregarde," but if there is, the Greg Sage write-up would make it complete.

And if by slim chance Beauregarde ever reads this–- thanks for igniting me and my pals' rage at The Olympic Auditorium in 1973, you helped make my first live wrestling card sweet and memorable!
