BACHDENKEL was an English rock band that started under the name "YOU KNOW WHO" in 1968. The three piece consisted of bandleader Colin Swinburne on vocals/guitars/keyboards, Peter kimberley on bass/piano/vocals and Brian Smith on drums, with Karel Beer as additional musician, lightening engineer and producer. The band moved to France to live, perform and record.

In the 10 years of excistence BACHDENKEL only recorded 2 albums, the first album "Lemmings" was recorded in 1970, but wasn't released until 1973, the second album called "Stalingrad" (in cyrillic letters) was recorded and released in 1977. in the mean time BACHDENKEL toured small venues through europe (mostly France).

BACHDENKEL started as a Flower Power psychedelic rock band (Pink Floyd, Soft Machine, Beatles, Procol Harum), but developed towards a more symphonic/melodic progstyle for their second album. Their sound is dominated by guitar and drums, with great vocals and occasional keyboard passages.

The band wasn't (and isn't) well known, but that doesn't lesson the experience and thrill you get when listening to their music. The 90's revival of prog resulted in some aknowledgement to their music, and Bachdenkel re-released their two albums on CD, with additional, mostly unreleased, material. Those CD's are very much recommended, also because the additional songs are practically as good as their previously released 'forgotten' masterpieces.

A fabulous band that deserves universal recognition.

Дебютный альбом "Lemings" они записали в 1970 году. Для своего времени пластинка звучит достаточно свежо. Неплохой, хотя и несколько песенный, мелодичный арт-рок с заметным "битлячим" привкусом, концептуальной лирикой и приятным вокалом пришелся бы тогда кстати. Но группе не повезло. По какой-то причине альбом вышел в свет только в 1973 году. Группа опоздала: с такой музыкой пробиться было нереально. Чем-то она напоминала упрощенную гитарно-ориентированную GENESIS. К примеру, BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST играли нечто подобное и звучали гораздо приятней и интересней. Трудности не остановили музыкантов, и все они, за исключением Моури и Скотта, продолжили совместную деятельность.

Продавался их продукт довольно вяло, и выпуск уже готовой к тому времени второй пластинки был отложен в долгий ящик. В 1975 году она все же вышла, но опять опоздала. Альбом "Сталинград" продемонстрировал, что группа несколько подросла. Исчезли заимствования из BEATLES, усложнились аранжировки, музыка стала более красивой и эпической. Прогресс был налицо, но до уровня высшей лиги было еще очень далеко, а на дворе уже была середина семидесятых - время начала конца арт-рока.

Вторая пластинка пользовалась умеренным спросом, в основном благодаря активной концертной деятельности группы. Ни разу не удостоившись чести выступить в качестве хедлайнера перед большой аудиторией, музыканты, тем не менее, часто получали приглашения открывать выступления заезжих британских знаменитостей. Им удалось поработать на одной сцене с CAMEL, YES, KING CRIMSON, GENESIS, однако им суждено было остаться в тени этих и подобных им монстров, так и не успев реализовать тот неплохой потенциал, который в них, несомненно, был заложен.

Последнее выступление коллектива состоялось в концертном зале "Benoit-sur-Loire" в ноябре 1982 года. В начале девяностых музыканты, решив тряхнуть стариной, снова собрались для небольшой серии концертов. На ленте это событие зафиксировано не было, но зато были переизданы в формате CD обе пластинки группы с эффектными обложками и кучей бонус-треков.

Although Bachdenkel is sometimes described of as a hard progressive band, its songs don't have the kind of keyboard-driven complexity normally associated with that genre. What they do have, though, are short songs with crunching guitar and pleasing vocal harmonies reminiscent of John Wetton's work with King Crimson. There's some nice dynamic contrast in their work when keyboards are brought in, as evidenced by the pensive "Equals" and "Come All Ye Faceless." Although this album may be destined to remain obscure, it does have one outstanding track that every collector should get their hands on: "An Appointment with the Master." It's a great combination of ripping leads, double-tracked vocals, and gloriously primitive garage-band drums.

I listen progressive rock approximately from twenty five years, now I think I know what I like and what not and with the passage of time, the surprises have made increasingly rare. Bachdenkel was a really big surprise. A good surprise! Their sound is very full-bodied, guitar-oriented but not heavy, very dynamic and sometimes sweet, with a great sense of construction, of sound structure and melody; but most importantly it is epic. In their compositions, I perceives a great preparation, everything is well calibrated and perfectly framed. It is not an album that hits at first listen but equally does not leave indifferent. The only flaw is the registration, unfortunately is not the clearest. Great music hidden in the folds of the early seventies. This is my opinion.

Given that Bachdenkel's superb debut Lemmings is a lost classic of melancholy guitar rock, it's no surprise that their long-delayed (recorded in 1975) follow-up album simply couldn't match its predecessor. It's not for lack of trying; the CD reissue is stuffed to the gills with material, doubling the length of the original LP while adding a comprehensive collection of unreleased singles, live studio versions, demos, and bootleg recordings. For that reason alone, most Bachdenkel fans will want to track this release down. But there are only a few real gems on here, most notably "Xenophon," which opens with an unadorned and unaccompanied vocal and builds up to a rousing conclusion of ragged harmonies, descending basslines, and a chiming piano.

The very good lead singer has a tone right between Kansas' and Neal Morse. The miscellaneous electric guitar arrangements are very original: the comparison with Steve Hillage is often quite valuable: Hillage however sounds more spacy and extravagant. The keyboards are rarely used: indeed the guitar-driven tracks do not justify the presence of organ and piano: they are rather used in a few specific tracks. Compared to their previous Lemmings album, here they are more elaborated, sructured and less psychedelic. There are many parts that have an excellent complex punk tendency: I even find some Neu! similarities, regarding some of the drums and electric guitar sounds, especially on the "Stalingrad" track. Obviously, they are 100 times better than Neu!, since their compositions remain very respectable and structured. The album globally is moderately progressive, psychedelic and it never falls into a deja vu rock/hard rock style.
