Even in these circumspect times‚ the ambitious ‘Tesori di Napoli’ series continues unearthing works whose merit is one thing‚ but whose significance for future generations is a fascinating sideshow. Niccolò Jommelli‚ if not exactly a household name‚ was an established Neopolitan mid18th century ‘master’ whose reputation was founded on operatic successes in several major centres – enough to secure him a fine eulogy from Dr Burney in 1770. For the uninitiated (and knowing only the odd cantata and vespers settings‚ I count myself such)‚ the fluid tonal progression of the recitatives in Jommelli’s comic ‘intermezzo’‚ Don Trastullo‚ has da PonteMozart resonating with illuminating prescience. Maybe it would be going too far to hear the beginning of Act 3 of Figaro in the recitativo accompagnato (when the clumsy Don is trying to woo Arsenia with amatory musical antics) but the natural comic evolution is more than just notable; the quicksilver characterisation in the following aria‚ ‘O che fiamma’‚ makes the point with considerable expertise. Yet ultimately‚ of course‚ Jommelli is still very much an opera seria composer and must be judged largely on the dramatic effectiveness and vocal practices of the period. In the best Neapolitan comic intermezzo tradition‚ lively interchange of characters in a predictable narrative is the order of the day. Here‚ we have three crooks: Don Trastullo and Giambarone‚ who fight for the same woman‚ Arsenia‚ who herself is swindling the Don as she is really in cahoots with Giambarone). After Latilla’s La finta cameriera and Cavallo’s Il giudizio universale (Opus 111‚ 1/01 and 11/00) and Hasse’s La contadina (Harmonia Mundi‚ 11/99) – to mention just three outstanding recordings of works in this genre – Antonio Florio presents another performance with a supreme level of theatrical realism and musical vitality. This is no mean achievement in music whose significance is only partially realisable on record. The light tenor‚ Rosario Totaro‚ is somewhat pushed to project above the strongly gestural‚ if not always unanimously tuned Capello de’Turchini. Neither he nor the blustering buffa of Giuseppe Naviglio can rival the vocal energy and sheer starquality of Roberta Invernizzi. The resident musicologist‚ Dinko Fabris‚ speaks of the ‘exceptional quality’ of Don Trastullo‚ a work regularly revived in the second half of the 18th century. In terms of a vivid concept‚ this is probably fair but judging the music ‘just as one hears it’‚ the melodic material is really not that memorable. For this reason‚ I would turn first to the abovementioned works for my dose of commedia Neapolitana. Nevertheless‚ there is much to enjoy here.–Gramophone
