Much like Richard Wagner, Arnold Schoenberg, and Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss truly stretched the abilities and the dimensions of the orchestra in his works, especially the symphonic tone poems by which most of the general music public know him by. Apart from creating works that require very large orchestral forces, Strauss also took chances in the musical keys that he utilized throughout his works, never actually settling on just one for his pieces, but often many. And to make thing seven more interesting, he often made very difficult subject matters, including literary works, the basis for his tone poems. Such is the case with this 1980 London/Decca recording by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Antal Dorati that highlights three of the composer's works in that arena.
The two best known works on this recording, "Don Juan" (based on a version of the Don Juan legend by Nikolaus Lenau), and "Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks", are examples of Strauss' chivalrous and frivolous (but not mindless) nature, and are striking examples of the way he had of expanding the capabilities of the orchestra; in many ways, though he didn't go quite as far as his three contemporaries did in terms of orchestral size, his orchestrations often take surprising and twisting turns. Then there is "Death And Transfiguration", a brooding work that concerns itself with the last moments in the life of life of an artist, and the climactic moment of transfiguration following death, starting in C Minor and ending very quietly and serenely in C Major, as the soul finds in the vast reaches of the cosmos the peace and tranquility that can rarely be found in a mortal life. Next to "Also Sprach Zarathustra", "Death And Transfiguration" is one of Strauss' most metaphysical works.
Throughout his career as a conductor, Dorati was a skilled interpreter of Strauss' works, though not usually thought of on the level of Fritz Reiner or George Szell, both of whom recorded Strauss' works extensively during the early stereo era of the 1950s and early 1960s. During his tenure as the Detroit Symphony's music director (1977-83) and Conductor Laureate (1983-88), however, Dorati recorded many of Strauss' tone poems, and this recording stands tall with many others, including Herbert Blomstedt's late 80s/early 90s surveys of these same tone poems, also for London, with the San Francisco Symphony. These performances, especially the ultimately poignant and optimistic end of "Death And Transfiguration", are well worth listening to for any discerning fan of classical music, especially the late Romantic period of music that Strauss helped to define.
