From Handel to Kurt Weill, from dramatic opera to lounge melody, from romantic Lied to pop song with Elvis Costello, Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter (*1955) is at ease again and again, once and for all, on every stage of the planet, whether it be the Berlin Philharmonic or the most intimate halls. In addition to her numerous appearances in opera, recital or oratorio, she is also hyperactive in the recording field, a delight for music lovers qobuzonauts ! From the top of her velvet voice, clear in the treble, dark in the bass – both registers being of a unique beauty –, capable of the most implausible pianissimos as well as the most thunderous bursts, Anne Sofie von Otter revolutionized a certain somewhat conservative vision of the state of classical singer, if only by not hesitating to escape into the field of pop and variety, not as did a certain famous Italian tenor-who acted rather "for the gallery" – but by bringing actually a different vocal vision in another world. This is indeed a complete artist, and completely unclassifiable, if not in the court of the very, very great.
