Following up on seeds first planted in the depths of the Interzone conspiracy, Nova Express combines the quirky atonal lyricism of Zorn's classical music with the cut up techniques of Naked City and the intimate virtuosity of the Masada songbook. Scored for a modern jazz quartet of vibes, piano, bass and drums, these episodic, dynamic and moody compositions feature some of Zorn's strongest writing. Performed by an all-star group of four downtown masters, this is an exciting new sound from the world of John Zorn. Modern chamber music filled with beautiful details and dramatic passions composed and conducted by our East Village musical alchemist.
John Zorn - Nova Express (2011)
While scored for a Modern Jazz Quartet style group, with John Medeski on Piano, Kenny Wollesen on Vibes, Trevor Dunn on bass and Joey Baron on drums, Zorn's latest is often less like a piece of 'jazz' and more like his modern classical music, with a number of songs being basically through composed with little improvisation. The music also owes something to his cut up compositional techniques and varies widely, both within individual songs, but especially between songs. It would be hard to characterize simply what the feel of the album is, but if you have been a fan of Zorn's compositions, it will likely be a deeply satisfying album, almost a pared down, more intimate successor to his recent 'Interzone'.TRACKLIST
The album opener "Chemical Garden" is a messy avant garde masterpiece. It starts with a spate of drum fury before the rest of the band comes in. The song is filled with quick stops as band members stop and drop out or come back in. It is the very model of modern, avant garde classical music scored for a jazz quartet. On the exact opposite end of the spectrum is the album closer, "Between Two Worlds" which is a piece of classic straight ahead jazz, deeply swung. Both satisfying for completely different reasons, those two tracks really exemplify the album for me. Jumping back and forth between styles, assonance and dissonance, improvisation and fully composed music, this album seeks to find a place in the not entirely classifiable.
At this point it is hard to imagine a band better suited to Zorn's compositions and musical styles than this one. Both on their individual strengths as musicians as well their longstanding associations with Zorn, they seem to understand what music requires and seem to have no difficulty moving through the often quite tricky compositions. Any fan of Zorn's composition will find something in this album to appreciate.
