Zhu Shirui's 12 Questions on 'Heavenward Questions' is a virtuoso concerto for Dizi (bamboo transverse flute) and large orchestra derives its name from a title of a poem by the ancient Chinese poet Qu Yuan (343-285 BC). Zhu's highly colorful score is a perfect fusion of ethnic melodic inspirations, vigorous rhythms (performed by a large compliment of Chinese percussion instruments) and a well-developed modernist aesthetic. Lasting just under 18 minutes, '12 Questions…' never overstays its welcome; indeed, you are left eager for more!
Shi-Rui Zhu was born in Sichuan/China and studies composition in Beijing until 1986. 1991 he went to Germany, advanced in composition with Helmut Lachenmann, Erhard Karkoschka in Stuttgart and with Klaus Huber, Brian Ferneyhough, Wolfgang Rihm, Mathias Spahlinger in Darmstadt. He also studied theory/musicology and philosophy until 1999. Since 2003 he is Professor for composition and new music at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. His music works haven been performed not only in Shanghai and Beijing, but also in important European Music Festivals such as in Berlin, Paris, Brussels, Rome, Scotland, Lyon, Stuttgart, Darmstadt, Karlsruhe, Freiburg etc.
