Very well done, in depth, reflection on the life of an absolute original. Great old footage of Frank, his music, family, band members, and the many wonderful Zappa media appearances. Highly recommend.

Great to see a very well made documentary on Frank's life done in a Zappaesque style (complete with quick edits and clips from cheap 1950s monster movies). Alex Winter's access to the Zappa vault allows him use previously unseen glimpses into Frank's early years. In addition, large parts of the film use Frank's voice-over as narration, making it seem as if he is telling his own story. My only hint of criticism is that perhaps too much time is spent on the original Mothers while glossing over some of my favorite later versions of the band (Grand Wazoo, Ruth-Napoleon-Duke band, etc.), but documentaries usually focus more on the developmental years. Great interviews with Ruth Underwood, Bunk Gardner, Ian Underwood, Steve Vai, Ray White, etc.
Frank Zappa probably deserves a 10-part Ken Burns type documentary (and I'm sure there is enough material out there to do one), but Ken Burns probably would never have the insight and enthusiasm that Alex Winter brings to the project. He manages to give us a glimpse of the complete man; composer, guitar player, businessman, advocate for freedom of expression, and even family man.
