A superb singer, with a very peculiar feeling for melodic performances. Yana Purim is reaching new heights in her special ability to create irresistible samples of jazzy Brazilian music and Braziliany jazz. With this new album, “Harvest Time”, Yana ceases to be a promising talent to become definitely recognized as a mature artist, one of the most expressive talents that emerged from the contemporary Brazilian musical scene.
Since the beginning of her career, ten years ago in USA — first singing as special guest with Frank Rosolino and Joe Farrell, and then leading her own group in the Los Angeles jazz clubs circuit — Yana has been surrounded by high caliber musicians. Luminaries on her previous albums included Dave Frishberg, Steve Swallow, Luiz Bonfa, Airto Moreira and Patrice Rushen; now, on “Harvest Time”, Yana brings together an incredible line-up ofguests, including many of today’s premier players.
Among these masters, the most famous certainly is Herbie Hancock, who recently increased his popularity by winning an Oscar in ’87 ( for the “Round Midnight” soundtrack) and a Grammy in ’88 (for “Call Sheet Blues", considered the best instrumental composition of that year). Yana used to hang out with Hancock when they were neighbors in LA many years ago, learning tunes and polishing her craft, but it’s the first time they gather their talents on record.
