The Buff Medways' last release, "This Is This", was a clever tribute to the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and all the more enjoyable for it. This time around, Wild Billy Childish pays homage to the Who and other Mod acts. The entire disc is meaty, beaty, big and bouncy, just like the 'oo. The Townshend-esque harmonies on most of the tracks are a real hoot. Childish is on a creative roll with the Buffs.

“Cars are an inevitability, but the bicycle is what we need. It’s an invention of genius,” the Buffs’ shamelessly anti-modernist leader Billy Childish told MOJO in 2003. Eighteen months on and Childish renewed his call for a return to the days of the two-wheeler by naming this fourth Buffs album after his mother’s old 1950s cycling club. Indeed, the stomping title track – released as a single – found itself accompanied by a charming olde worlde video (shot on Super 8 film, of course) featuring Ma Childish riding through Whitstable. If reinventing the wheel has never been Childish’s bag, Medway Wheelers is nevertheless one of his most progressive and satisfying sets to date in a career that spans close to 30 years and over 50 long-players. Alongside three-chord nuggets like The Man I Am and the instrumental frenzy of Dustbin Mod, you get the Kinks-like put down of I’m Glad I’m Not Like David Wise, the art-school-bashing, Who-inspired Private View and the piano-kissed romanticism of The Poets Dream. Overall, it makes for a clattering, caustic and wonderfully human triumph. With the former Thee Headcoats leader having disbanded the Buffs and now fronting his new band, The Musicians Of The British Empire, Medway Wheelers – along with its chilling predecessor 1914 – is as a good a place to start for anyone seeking to discover just why Childish has inspired everyone from Kurt Cobain to Blur and Beck. End of status report

Billy Childish formed the Buff Medways in 2000. Their full name is Wild Billy Childish & The Friends of the Buff Medway Fanciers Association.

During the 19th century a breed a chicken was developed peculiar to the Medway area. The breed, now extinct, was a table bird for the London hotel market. The BUFF MEDWAY project, based at Fort Amherst, Chatham, is attempting to recreate that ancient fowl through a selective breeding project.

The original line up was Billy on guitar and vocal, Johnny Barker (bass) and Wolf Howard (drums), both ex-Daggermen. Johnny has now left the band to be replaced by Graham Day ex of The Prisoners.

The BUFF MEDWAYS cut a dash with their Victorian army uniforms and their vintage Vox amps. The gear may be old but as one critic wrote the band are “the snarled lip embodiment of rock’n‘roll spirit rather than nostalgia or shabby revivalism”. Live and on record The BUFF MEDWAYS are all about great songs and vibrant raw energy – no frills.

They did their first single on their own Buff Medway Records followed by the DG single ‘Don’t Hold Me Back’ (Damgood 188).

They have now released four albums, two for Graham Coxon’s label Transcopic Records ‘Steady The Buffs’ & ‘1914’, one on ‘Vinyl Japan’ called ‘This Is This’ and their last album ‘Medway Wheelers’ is out on Damaged Goods.

Check out their female alter-egos The Buffets.

The Buffs have now decided to call it a day and played their last gig to a totally sold out show at London’s Dirty Water Club on the 27th of October 2006.
