Wawau Adler calls his new album "I Play With You." He changes playfully between the Selmer No. 828, a classical guitar from the forties, over modern types to the electric guitar. Finally, the title could also refer to the repertoire that is played here: After Adler has interpreted in his earlier recordings mainly standards - his last album "Happy Birthday Django 110", released two years ago, was, for example, explicitly dedicated to his and the great role model of all gypsy jazz guitarists Django Reinhardt. With his own songs you can get to know the whole Wawau Adler on "I Play With You". The one who never denies his Manouche roots, but who has derived his own style from them and has always applied it to all jazz like few of his generation. Biréli Lagrène was the first formative influence for Josef "Wawau" Adler, born in Karlsruhe in 1967, when he was twelve years old. The guitarist who is considered by many to be Django Reinhardt's most legitimate successor precisely because he never simply copied the forefather of hot jazz and gypsy swing, but developed him further in his own way and transferred him to modern jazz styles. And Adler did and does the same. Already on Adler's first album "With Body And Soul" from 1991 you can hear how he turned to bebop and fusion. Although he went "Back to the Roots" (as two of his CDs from that time are called) in the two-thousand years, he always kept his openness. Which can now be enjoyed on "I Play With You" in a range as seldom before, and that mainly with his own pieces. But on his "Martinique", for example, Wawau Adler casually saunters into the Caribbean with idiosyncratic harmonies and dreamy runs. And on "Jazzy Poplair," as the title promises, he gets involved with the mainstream, at times making the electric guitar sound almost like George Benson. The title track sounds excitingly like a mix of romantic classical and Great American Songbook. "Samoir Sur Seine," finally, is an enchanting excursion into melancholy chanson.

The latest album by gypsy jazz guitarist Wawau Adler shows his wide range of musical influences. The ensemble here is the drum-less, three guitar, double bass and violin format popularized by Django Reinhardt’s Quintette Du Hot Club De France. We have the amazing Hono Winterstein on rhythm guitar, bassist Joel Loche, violist Alexandre Cavaliere and guitarist Denis Chang.

The album begins with For Leo, a driving up tempo swing Wawau Adler original that establishes the mood of this album. The unison melody played by guitar & violin blends perfectly too! Then, we hear a bass solo from Joel Locher, followed by a great solo by Alexandre Cavaliere before the first guitar solo on the album leads up back to the head.

Following that, the mood changes with the beautiful ballad by Luis Gasté entitled Le Soir. The trading section at the end of the piece is a highlight as we hear a great musical conversation between the guitar & violin.

Wawau’s tune Jazzy Populair is up next with the catchy melody. This time we get to hear Wawau stretch out on a Gibson electric guitar (with George Benson influences) outlining the chord changes with impeccable time. Alexandre’s violin solo here is a delight as well before we hear the melody again.

With Manoir de mes Rêves (Django Reinhardt) – this tune sounds great with this ensemble’s interpretation. Some may know this piece as “Django’s Castle” although the French title actually translates to “Manor of my dreams” or “Castle of my dreams”.

For Holzmanno is next with the pulsing rhythm and a melody that plays with the space. Love the expressive violin & guitar solos here as well!

Ray Noble’s Cherokee makes an appearance as track 6. Even at this fast tempo, the improvisations are melodic and tasteful.

The title track, I Play With You brings the mood into a introspective feeling as the violin & guitar melody plays. I particularly love the harmonics which punctuate the phrases at times (and at the end of the piece too). It is a treat to hear Wawau’s originals on this album.

What Is This Thing Called Love begins slow and then goes into a faster tempo continuing with powerful playing throughout.

Wawau’s piece Martinique again bring us into a different realm with Wawau playing electric guitar again. The rhythmically bouncy opening lines by Wawau in his guitar solo sounds great to set the vibe before he goes into a mix of bebop and blues influenced soloing. The double time guitar lines are just the right intensity before we hear the violin take a solo again. Wawau’s chordal stabs are much like horn hits answering the violin with the stable duel guitar in the background. The cadenza at the end sounds great too. Love the lines!

La Belle Vie is filled with a lot of tasty soloing as the ensemble keeps the head nodding pulse going. Between the double time lines, rhythmically powerful hits & bluesy phrases, there’s a lot to love in this piece.

Samois Sur Seine is a romantic piece that takes us to the town to which Django Reinhardt retired (and the site of the famous annual music festival). The tremolo strums during the violin solo are a nice texture before the double stops take over during the guitar solo. For me, these tasteful musical choices are a real highlight to this piece.

Rodgers and Hart’s Chicago closes the album on an upbeat feeling & virtuosic playing in the guitar solo. I also love the trading section, which although relatively brief, sounded great! A fitting end to a great album.

In conclusion, this is a wonderful album that is a worthy addition to the library for any gypsy jazz fan. The focus here througout is great music, well played. Whether you are an avid music listener of this style or play some gypsy jazz guitar yourself, definitely get this record!
