Wadada Leo Smith´s latest album features "Rosa Parks: Pure Love. An Oratorio of Seven Songs,"another extended composition by Smith inspired by the civil rights movement in the United States. This new major work is composed for the iconic civil rights hero Rosa Parks (1913-2005) and performed by three vocalists, a double-quartet and a drummer with electronics. The album is released in February 2019 to celebrate Rosa Parks´ birthday on February 4.

Trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith has created a boundary-breaking work that combines the classical form of the oratorio (a musical composition with dramatic underpinnings, similar to an opera) with avant-garde jazz, drone, modern musical production, and historical narrative. Smith, a composer with a long history writing ambitiously proportioned works, has described the oratorio as a “meditation” on the civil rights movement, dedicated to “Rosa Parks, a person of exceptional courage and wisdom, who made the right move of resistance at the right time.” He employs music that is alternately challenging, somber, austerely abstracted, classically beautiful, and wracked with tension to guide our imaginations through the momentous chain of events that Parks set off by refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus in 1955.

Smith summons a small army: The piece is written for three vocalists, a string quartet (RedKoral Quartet), a trumpet quartet (BlueTrumpet Quartet), drums, and electronics; it also incorporates excerpts of early recordings made with his former Creative Construction Company bandmates Anthony Braxton, Leroy Jenkins, and Steve McCall. The decision to fold in elements of his own musical past imbues the piece with a sense of the long arc of history.

For all this, the sound of Rosa Parks is often minimalist, so much so that at times—notably the chilling, beatless later stages of “Vision Dance 2: Defiance, Justice and Liberation”—the record resembles organic drone music more than it does jazz, an exercise in atmosphere over melody, in which subtle electronic effects create brief, almost hallucinatory textures. Album opener “Prelude: Journey” is closer to traditional jazz, the BlueTrumpet Quartet’s nerve-rending tonal attack jousting with Pheeroan akLaff’s skittery drum lines; the long notes and unsettling horn melodies get under the skin like an ecclesiastical early-warning system. “Song 3: Change It!” uses cinematic string stabs, restless drum fills, and rousing operatic vocals from Karen Parks, who delivers her lines like a Shakespearean hero on the eve of battle. And in the second half of “Vision Dance 1: Resistance and Unity,” both quartets play off unnerving electronic effects from Hardedge (Velibor Pedevski, a longtime collaborator of Smith and his A.A.C.M. peers), violin notes sliding off treated sound effects like a punch-drunk cartoon boxer, while trumpets urgently call for attention.

These songs are frequently beautiful; the almost Björkian way Min Xiao-Fen’s voice soars over sparse string lines on “Song 1: The Montgomery Bus Boycott—381 Days of Fire” is particularly gorgeous. But more important is the way in which Smith and his musicians evoke the emotional tension of this fraught period in American history. “Rosa Parks: Mercy, Music for Double Quartet” uses dissonance and a steadily mounting nervous musical energy to capture the drama of the moment that Parks refused to give up her seat. “Song 1” teases the taste of victory with an uplifting swell of vocal melody; Xiao-Fen savors the word “justice” and “Song 3: Change It!” burns with righteous anger.

Rosa Parks is a continuation of Smith’s work on Ten Freedom Summers and America's National Parks, both politically charged pieces that played off not just the civil rights struggle but the very idea of America—its freedoms, its failures, its legacy. Vividly conveying historical injustice and ongoing struggle through wild instrumental swings and empathetic composition, Rosa Parks is music for the ages.
