    Vivaldi - Les Basses Reunis, Cocset - Suonata a violoncello solo Del Signor Antonio Vivaldi (1999) {Repost}

    The discovery, a few years ago, of manuscripts including three new sonatas for cello and basso continuo by Antonio Vivaldi (1681-1734), somewhat changes our view of Vivaldi's Cello Sonatas, of which we formally possessed six, published in Paris in 1740. The CD is beautifully packaged and has a 26 page booklet in French and English full of details of the art, artists and the sonatas.

    By Leslie Richford
    Antonio Vivaldi (1681 - 1734): Six Sonatas for Violoncello solo taken from the edition published in Paris in 1740 (one), from a manuscript discovered in the library of Count Schonborn (two), from a manuscript kept at Naples Conservatory (two) and from a manuscript found at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris (one). Performed on historical instruments by Bruno Cocset, cello, Blandine Rannou, harpsichord and organ, Pascal Monteilhet, theorbo and guitar, and Richard Myron, double bass and violone. Recorded in May 1998 at the Church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Nonnains, Arsenal de Metz, France. Published in 1999 as Alpha 004. Total playing time: 71'42".

    This CD indeed offers a new approach to Antonio Vivaldi with recordings of absolutely rare chamber repertoire. The sonatas are for violoncello solo, but are here performed with a variety of continuo instruments: harpsichord, organ, theorbo, guitar and double bass or violone. The whole is very closely and clearly recorded, giving the listener the opportunity to savour the delightful sound combinations and the intense violoncello playing of Bruno Cocset who, although definitely an early music specialist, here reminds me of Pablo Casals in the way he invests "soul" particularly in the slower movements. The music as a whole is enchanting and not at all what one would have expected of Vivaldi (so much for that old adage that Vivaldi wrote a single concerto four hundred times!). The booklet enclosed in the digipack gives details of the instruments, but Cocset's essay on the music is limited in scope, being dwarfed by the long description of the painting by Caliari (Veronese) used on the cover of the digipack itself - something that certainly adds a certain artistic flair to the product but which also tends to detract from the value of the music itself. At all events, this is yet another valuable release on the French Alpha label, a label which has caused a considerable stir over the past few years.
