The two obscure sets reissued on this single CD from Original Jazz Classics were originally released as 10" LPs by the Nocturne label. The first six numbers are West Coast cool jazz by a sextet featuring baritonist Virgil Gonsalves, valve trombonist Bob Enevoldsen, and tenor saxophonist Buddy Wise. These concise renditions of five standards and the obscure "Bounce" find the musicians in excellent form, making the most of each note. The second half of the CD is an unrelated quartet date by the eccentric tenor saxophonist Steve White, who is joined by pianist Jimmie Rowles, bassist Harry Babasin, and drummer Roy Harte; trombonist Herbie Harper is a big asset on "Topsy." White's sound was quite influenced by Lester Young, while his odd singing (heard on "My New Jet Plane") is certainly unique. An interesting if not essential reissue.
Numerous jazz labels comprised the Fantasy family and its Original Jazz Classics series. The majority of OJC reissues were originally from Prestige, Riverside and Contemporary, but there were also smaller labels like Period and Nocturne. Here we get two 10"s from the latter California based label, both recorded in 1954 by Virgil Gonsalves and Steve White respectively. Gonsalves was a West Coast baritone sax player, and his session of six standards with a solid sextet – Bob Enevoldsen on valve trombone, Buddy Wise on tenor sax (only player I'd never heard of on this disc), Lou Levy on piano, Harry Babasin on bass and Larry Bunker on drums – is thoroughly enjoyable, if not spectacular. On the other hand, the Steve White session is horrible. The players are good enough – Babasin again with Jimmy Rowles on piano and Roy Harte on drums, with trombonist Herbie Harper making it a quintet on one track, "Topsy" – but White can't decide whether to focus on his skillful tenor sax playing, or his annoying Bob Dorough-style vocals, on novelty tracks like "My New Jet Plane." Four stars for Gonsalves, but White only gets two – so three overall for what is ultimately an underwhelming disc.
