This set from the long-defunct Interlude label brings back an outing by vibraphonist Vic Feldman. Feldman is showcased in a quartet with pianist Carl Perkins, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and drummer Stan Levey on half of the selections, while the remaining tracks add trombonist Frank Rosolino and tenor saxophonist Harold Land. An obscurity ("Chart of My Heart"), two standards, and four Feldman originals comprise this enjoyable and relaxed bop date.
Champagne Music For Cats Who Don't Drink.
The title of my review is the subtitle of this album. Putting together the cover, the subtitle, the stellar cast (Frank Rosolino trombone, Carl Perkins piano, Leroy Vinnegar bass, Stan Levey drums, the years of the release date (the fifties) and the place where this one has been recorded (California), you have a clear picture of the kind of music you are about to experience. It is exilarating west coast jazz of the highest caliber, funny, virtuosistic, fast, tender, boppish, melodic Jazz. Victor Feldman was a child prodigy back in England, his homeplace. He begun with drums, but then simply added two more instruments to his bag, the piano and the vibes that he played at stellar levels. He was a virtuoso on all these instruments and during his career he decided what to play, session per session. Here he played the vibes, leaving the piano seat to the great Carl Perkins. Victor had a very musical and lovely style. He absolutly built his solos with tastes and intelligence and with touch, heart and don't forget, unbelievable chops. The music here is phenomenal, I agree with the other guy who reviewed this album before me, VSOP records from the fifities are crazy, phenomenal stuff. VSOP is a label which re release obscure albums from the fifties, from the catalogues of many different american record companies gone long time ago, such as Tampa and several others. What can I say about this album that I loved for soooo many years? It's Jazz at the highest level, entertaining and incredibly sophisticated, with a stellar cast of musicians, starting from Victor a true Jazz master such as there were few in the entire history of Jazz. This album started my love for Victor Feldman. After this one, that I bought several years ago and that I know by memory now, I bought every other albums where I could find him. He played with Cannonball, Miles, Barney Kessel, he recorded many many other cats albums. Just the other day I bought three Tempo albums (an english record company now gone) that he recorded in London in 1955/1957 (they are released again by Jasmine). I'll review them very soon, but in the meantime I can tell you they are sublime and that you can buy them with confidence (Departure Date, In London Vol 1 and 2). Victor was not a child prodigy. Let's call him simply a Prodigy.
