    Fiji (ethnic Fijians)

    1 Vakamalolo
This is a hand dance performed by women seated cross-legged in front a group of men who sing while striking the slit log drum lali. The dancers move their arms elegantly while swaying their bodies to front and back and from side to side.
    2 Meke Iri
This fan dance can be performed by either men or women and in either standing or seated positions. It is here performed standing by sixteen women. Nine men sit inside the circle formed by the women and strike lali drums to articulate the rhythm.
    3 Isa lei
This is one of Fiji's most well-known songs although its origins are unknown. Some say that it is the song of the daughter of a chieftain who fell in love with a foreign sailor and was distraught at the thought of having to part from him. It is ascribed by others to the conductor of a Fijian military band, while there are other theories that it was introduced from Tonga and Hawaii.

    Fiji (Rotuma islanders)

    4 Hi’i
This dance is performed by nine men and nine women who emerge from each side of the performance area. Whereas the women wave their hands slowly, the men leap up in energetic movements and assume aggressive boxing poses.
    5 Tipa
This piece is based on the melody of the well-known Fijian folk song Chulu chululu , the title of which is an imitation of a bird's cry. The text, however, is sung here in the Rotuma language. The performers begin to dance after the first chorus.
    6 Tipa
Another example of a piece in the Tipa genre.

    Fiji (Banaba islanders)

    7 Te kabuti
This piece is danced by four women in a manner similar to the piece with the same title from Kiribati. But whereas the Kiribati version includes imitation of the movement of frigate birds, the movements in the present dance are considerably more energetic. The song is sung by a female soloist accompanied by a chorus of ten men and women who provide rhythmic accompaniment by means of handclapping. A guitar is also incorporated into the performance.

    Wallice and Futuna (Futuna)

    8 Sasa
As with the Samoan Sasa, the present Sasa is a representation of scenes from everyday life through the medium of dance. The dancers line up in three rows with eight people in each row: women in the front row and men in the middle row, both in a seated posture, and men dancing in standing position in the back row. Accompaniment is provided by the pate slit log drum and a guitar.
    9 Takofe
This is a type of war dance performed with narrow poles about 2.5 metres long and employing highly stylised motions. The sound of the twenty dancers striking their poles against the ground produces a strongly percussive effect.
    10 Taofai
This dance is performed by men with their legs bent to music accompanied by the pate drum. The singing sounds like the chanting of a magical spell. The rhythm is enhanced by the rattles attached to the dancers' ankles.
    11 Soamako
This men's dance is accompanied by drums and employs distinctive gestures in a highly energetic and stirring manner.

    Wallice and Futuna (Wallice)

    12 Kailao
As in the case of the Takofe dance from Futuna, this is a stylised war dance intended more to demonstrate the dancers' skill at manipulating their spears than to express the tension of actual battle. Accompaniment is provided by the pate drum and an oil can. A similar and perhaps related dance is performed in Tonga.
    13 Soamako
This is a men's standing dance performed to a simple repeated phrase, and in this respect is similar to the Soamako from Futuna featured on Track 11 . A feature of this performance is the gradual increase in tempo in order to heighten the excitement.

    Tuvalu

14 Fakafetai ko manuia mai (Thanks, you are well)
15 Tagi le Leona (Cry of the Lion)
16 E leai ea ni pulu pasana (Is there no mediator?)
These three pieces are all in the same form. Male and female dancers stand in two rows and dance mainly with movements of the hands. The tempo begins slowly and gradually accelerates before the music comes to an abrupt end. Male and female singers sit behind the dancers, ac-companying themselves by striking flat wooden boxes and oil cans. All three pieces are based on teachings from the Bible.
