Robby Faverey can't describe his feelings for the guitar in any other way than as a love-hate relationship. The problems between the guitarist and his instrument reached such a pitch that he even decided never to play again and to direct his attentions solely to the baroque lute. An escape ladder the rungs of which soon broke. All alone in Cologne with his lute, in a sad little room with a view of a factory, Faverey soon saw his dream crumble. The baroque violinist Sigiswald Kuyken pointed out that a life with only ancient music also has its problems and anyway, Faverey couldn't keep his hands off the guitar belonging to Kuyken's daughter. Getting to know the music written for his instrument by the Cuban composer Leo Brouwer made forgetting the guitar an impossibility. The passion for Brouwer's music remains the source of energy Faverey has for his faith in the guitar. The guitar is not an instrument which emphatically and powerfully manifests itself, and Robby Faverey presents himself with a certain hesitation. He doesn't view himself as front-line fighter for his instrument. Nevertheless, in spite of all this, he is in many ways seen as inseparable from his instrument.
This part of the 'Ladder of escape' brings you a guitarist finding a way to live with his instrument. As a Surinamer, Faverey has a strong link with South American culture and in the music which belongs there a possible escape is seen from the limitations experienced with the repertoire for the guitar. Leo Brouwer's compositions extend the possibilities. Brouwer combines South American folklore with modem composition techniques. That the guitar is often seen as a lonesome solo instrument is argued against in a number of duets with other instruments.
