This CD is a live recording of a monastic service of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism celebrated on April 22nd, 2008 in the Shinju-an chapel of the Daitokuji Temple in Kyoto, during a commemoration for universal peace and for predecessors of the order now deceased, including the monk Ikkyu, the founder of this chapel and the 48th Reverend monk of the temple from 1474-81. The celebration, constituting twelve sequences performed without interruption, is structured by the alternation of instrumental passages with the recitation of sutras and prayers. Apart from instruments traditionally used in the cult, like a large and small bell, a dora (small gong) and a wood block, lithophones (sanukite) have been added. The latter, discovered by the geologist Hitoshi Maeda in the 1980s on the island of Shikoku, are made from the resonant stone of volcanic rock. Sanukite were ameliorated in the 1990s by the percussionist Stomu Yamash'ta, who modernised them with micro-contact and reverberation, and developed new instrumental techniques for them. The restoration of these ancient instruments thanks to the initiative of Stomu Yamash'ta leads the participants into a new sound world corresponding to the universe of sanyata (vacuity) in the spirit of Zen Buddhism.
