The popularity of the ''Polovtsian Dances'' would have eclipsed the rest of ''Prince Igor'', this vast historical fresco in which Alexander Borodin, absorbed by his works of chemist, worked from 1869? “We start a hundred different things. Will we be able to finish some of them? […] I harbor the hope of conducting my opera to its last bar, but […] I advance slowly and at long intervals. It was Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov who granted this wish, after the sudden death of his comrade from the Group of Five in 1887. To put in order and complete the score, he was helped by his disciple Alexander Glazunov. Thus the great posthumous work could be created in 1890 in Saint Petersburg.Tracklist:
The ''Polovtsian March'' opens Act III (you will hear it chiselled by Fritz Reiner in 1957 in sumptuous stereophony) while the tableau of ''Polovtsian Dances'', completed by Borodin in 1879 (and brushed, in “Living Presence”, in all its wild splendor by Antal Dorati in 1956) straddles Acts I and II and involves the chorus. The theme heady of the ''Dance of young girls'', quoted from the introduction, will know a glorious posterity through the musical ''Kismet'' (1953) and its hit, ''Strangers in Paradise''.
Drawing from the sketches accumulated for his opera, the composer developed in 1880 a symphonic poem entitled ''In the steppes of Central Asia'', and dedicated to Franz Liszt, met on the sidelines of a scientific trip. The pictorial gesture of Igor Markevich, in 1959, polishes the nuances of the crescendo-decrescendo imagined by Borodin: "In the monotonous and sandy […] first sounds a peaceful Russian song. We hear the trampling of approaching horses and camels, we hear the melancholy accents of an oriental melody. A caravan, escorted by Russian soldiers, crosses the immensity of the desert "… before disappearing in the distance, while resounds, on the flute, a final echo of the Russian song.
Begun in 1886, a third symphony was to mark for the composer his “triumph over adversity”. He exhibited one evening, at the piano, the four movements projected before Glazunov. The latter published posthumously the initial ''Moderato assai'', based on sketches and his memories, and the scherzo, recycling that of a string quartet. Embroidered virtuoso orchestration by Glazunov attracted, in 1954, another great servant of Russian music, Ernest Ansermet.
Finally, from Borodin's chamber music production, we can highlight the ''String Quartet No. 2'' (1882), celebrating his wife and their twentieth wedding anniversary. In 1961, the well named Quatuor Borodine brings an inimitable fever to the ''Notturno''. And what a sense of drama in the finale, where spectral apparitions will try, from the outset and each time in vain, to clip the wings of this irrefutable love!
