Psychedelic/ Doom Metal | Supernatural Cat, CAT 005

Fourth full-length from these psychedelic doom giants.

Ufomammut, three guys from Tortona, a small city in northern Italy, can without exaggerating be seen as the missing link between drone, stoner and spacerock. With kidney stone-grinding bass lines and other haunting, repetitive sounds they have been building a fan base that for unknown reasons is still rather small after almost ten years. Ufomammut remains underground and that is a shame. OK, these gentlemen do not make music that is easily accessible. Going to a Ufomammut concert for a nice evening of entertainment and a chat with your friends: a naÔve thought. Ufomammut is something that happens to you. Like the band’s name indicates it is a coming together of something unknown and something very massive. You get crushed by the thundering sound waves and if you’re lucky you find yourself lying – dazed and confused – with bruised eardrums, wondering what the heck just happened to you. Mushrooms, pills, powders etc.? No need for that. Ufomammut is a self-contained trip.

‘Idolum’ is different from its predecessors (most recently ‘Lucifer Songs’ that was released three years ago) in details only. As usual this disc comes with beautiful packaging. The question whether Ufomammut are artists making music or musicians who know how to paint and draw still needs to be answered. Ufomammut is also Malleus, an artcollective known for its special silkscreen prints. Musically it is more of the same. They kept their preference for wordplay with songs named ‘Hellectric’ and ‘Elephantom’ and – very funny – this cd lasts 66 minutes and 6 seconds. It takes a very long (too long) track that seems to be stretched just to reach this length, but who cares. The fascination with the number 666 still is curious. I wonder how many metalheads have heard about the Bible-scholars who are now seriously considering the fact that the number of the beast ought to be 616 and not 666? Hmm… I digress once more. The only really new element on this CD is the guest-vocals by singer Rose Kemp on ‘Ammonia’. Rose Kemp will be playing at the Roadburn festival as well, so guess who will be paying Ufomammut a visit when they are doing their show on the main stage? Rose’s contributions consists of angelic “lalala” singing, at leas a refreshing contrast to the normal vocals. Lyrically not even that different, but a few octaves lower.

Does the fact that it is not really original mean ‘Idolum’ is a bad album? No, most certainly not. The Ramones played variations of the same song for more than thirty years and they became very good at it. As a band you do not have to re-invent yourself all the time, you ought to be happy with something of a typical, recognisable sound. Ufomammut knows how to find the borders within the territory they have created for themselves without fans needing to be afraid it does not sound like Ufomammut. This is very heavy, low stoner / doom with a big portion of space to finish it. If you are not used to it, take small bites or you will have a stomach-ache. The fans on the other hand will find this another delicacy.
