U2 - Opening Night Vancouver "30 Years And I Still Can't Play Harmonica" (2CD) (2017)

Last night U2 opened their lengthy The Joshua Tree Tour 2017 at the BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, Canada. The Irish rock band are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their seminal 1987 album The Joshua Tree, which they had previously announced would be played in full at every stop of the tour.

Bono & Co. began the night with each band member walking one-by-one to the front section of the stage that extended into the audience, where a smaller set of their gear was placed. The band opened their first show since December of last year with “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” which was followed by “New Year’s Day,” “A Sort of Homecoming” (which was played for the first time since 2001), “MLK” and “Pride (In the Name of Love).”

The band then moved back to their full set up, where they were backed by massive video screens to kick-off The Joshua Tree portion of the show. U2 next ran through the 11-track album in its entirety, which included a number of notable performances. The band tackled “Red Hill Mining Town” for the first time ever live, while “Trip Through The Wires,” hadn’t been played since December of 1987 and “Exit” was dusted off for the first time since 1989.

U2 returned to the stage for a lengthy encore, which kicked off with “Beautiful Day,” and continued with takes on “Elevation,” “Ultraviolet” and “One.” The band then moved back to the front of the stage were they had started the night, to finish off the show with a cover of the Passengers’ “Miss Sarajevo,” and the first-ever performance of the Songs of Experience track “The Little Things That Give You Away.”

U2’s The Joshua Tree Tour 2017 continues tomorrow night with a show at CenturyLink Field in Seattle.
