Thomas Savy's real attachment to the Afro-American jazz tradition does not eclipse a European sensibility and passion for classical music. His be-bop phrasing, influenced by the heroes of the tenor sax, rests on an instrumental ability and poise which reminds one, through its inflection and tone, of works from the contemporary clarinet repertoire. His deep attachment to swing does not overshadow a sense of balance worthy of a chamber musician. For him, the bass clarinet is an instrument of reconciliation; allowing him to follow the spirit of both Dolphy and Brahms, Boulez and Coltrane, Mozart and Lester Young.
