Born in Chicago in 1933 and raised in Seattle (where Ray Charles was an early mentor), Jones got his start playing trumpet with Lionel Hampton from 1950-53. He then began producing for other artists in the mid-’50s. During the ’60s he led his own big band, headed the A&R staff at Mercury Records, produced Frank Sinatra and Count Basie, and still found the time to score dozens of movies and TV shows. In 1974, "Q" (as he came to be known) picked up his first gold album as a solo artist, for Body Heat.
