Classic jazz guitar trio at it's best as they swing through six well known standards and three original compositions.
The Gerry Beaudoin Trio has been a musical vehicle for award winning jazz guitarist Gerry Beaudoin for almost thirty years. During this time Gerry has carved out a career as a leader, arranger and guitarist and educator. His first national success was in 1990 with the Boston Jazz Ensemble. Gerry then went on to make three critically acclaimed Gerry Beaudoin Trio recordings with mandolin titan, David Grisman. The award-winning guitarist, (1992 National Association of Independent Record Distributors Honorable Mention in the traditional jazz category, 1993 and 1995 CADENCE EDITORS CHOICE AWARD, and placement of his music on the Grammy Awards ballot three times) has had a career that has taken him from the jazz clubs of Boston and New York to symphony hall’s and the concert stage across the USA and Canada. A graduate of Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music Gerry quickly became a fixture on the New England jazz scene. Encouraged by jazz guitar legends Bucky Pizzarelli and Kenny Burrell after meeting them as a young student , Gerry combined the chordal techniques and sensibilities of Bucky Pizzarelli with the easy, bluesy swing of Kenny Burrell to create a unique style all his own. A veteran of over fifty recordings, his latest" Ode To A Summer's Day" is with his new trio of Gerry alongside Ron Ormsby on acoustic bass and Bart Weisman on drums. A chance meeting at a performance on Cape Cod led to this recording. In Gerry's own words," I showed up at a gig on the Cape one night in 2012. I had never played with either Ron or Bart but was familiar with their reputation and they certainly lived up to it that night. From note number one it was evident that they understood the subtleties and dynamics in the music that are so important to a guitarist when he is playing in a trio situation. It made for a swinging musical statement enjoyed by the audience as well as the band members. " After a few more concerts where their musical empathy kept growing it was decided to record a CD together. Ode To A Summer's Night is the result of that session. A program of six well known standards including Duke Ellingtons,Day Dream and In A Mellow Tone, and the Kenny Durham staple Blue Bossa as well as three originals. The title track Ode To a Summer's Night ,composed by Beaudoin, is a beautiful ballad in the tradition but with some interesting chord changes. The other two original's are Beaudoin's Azzure Mineur, and Teddy's Turn. The latter features long time Beaudoin associate Teddy Lavash on second guitar. Recorded live in the studio in one afternoon it is a " what you hear is what you get" jazz recording. No fancy studio gimmicks or tricks. Just three musicians creating beautiful music and reacting to each other. The way jazz should be.
