The Bachelors took old standards from the 20's & 30's, and made these songs into their own unique sound. They were Blessed with three incredibly talented people. Con Cluskey (Lead Vcls, Guitar, & Harmonica), Dec Cluskey (Backing Vcls lower range, Guitar, Banjo,Harmonica & Musical arranger & semi producer) & finally John Stokes (Backing Vcls high range, Bass, Double Bass, & Harmonica ). Together they created the 'Sound' of the Bachelors. Their work for Decca Records in the 1960's was truly outstanding.
In Con, they had a Passionate , Emotionally Charged Vocalist who would give his 'all' on each performance. Witness "If ever i would leave you" (originally from "Camelot") , Con's performance is Earth Shattering ! He sings with total commitment leaving the listener in tears ( YES, it is THAT GOOD ! ) . With the Irving Berlin song ''Marie" , every harmony is Perfect. This song Soars along with Great Energy, with those wonderful Augmented Fifth Chords perfectly placed. Another 'Spine Tingler' (There are plenty !) is "Love me with all your Heart", the boys use the Key Change up one step to Fantastic effect (they do this alot) & it works Wonderfully ! The Bachelors found there way into my Musical Subconcious, & my Heart at the age of Seven in 1964, and there they have stayed. I have enjoyed many types of music, from Rock, Pop, Prog, Classical, Blues etc etc, but what these Guys did, was Fantastic ! I have learned the Boys recorded Hundreds of songs. Many can be found on the Decca Dbl cd, Readers Digest box and a couple more. There are far too many songs to single out here, but buying any original Decca Collection (such as this) you cannot go wrong. The Bachelors were Brilliant during there 60's & 70's period. Their performances sound Fresh and Awe Inspiring today (50 odd yrs later).
