The program is taken from the Squarcialupi Codex, a lavish manuscript of 14th-century Italian music, named after a 15th-century organist at the cathedral of Florence who came into possession of it. It is located in a Florence library but is now available in a very expensive facsimile. The music, all secular works originating in Florence, is grouped by composer (a portrait illuminates each group) and arranged in chronological order of their age. The first five composers have only six selections here, with the rest of the disc devoted to Bartolino and Andreas. The disc takes its title from Giovanni’s madrigal in praise of music, the first piece on the disc.

The latest issue on the label created by Kees Boeke and Jill Feldman has Feldman singing all but two selections, with Boeke and two colleagues providing instrumentals and accompaniment. The choice of program is quite original, for a brief check showed two of Bartolino’s pieces on an Orlando Consort disc (23:2). Both pieces are duplicated elsewhere but there is nothing else on CD. The results are ravishing, with music that originated in Florence so long ago now wafting out of the idyllic Tuscan countryside where the artists live, growing olives and making olive oil (and naming their own label accordingly). This will hardly duplicate anything in your collection, so convince yourself that Trecento music is worth having and this is the way to have it. Gorgeous.
