"In C" is one of those contemporary works of which each listening differs from the previous one. Not because the interpretation is better or worse, but because the score is moving, according to the wishes of Terry Riley. We know, with "Stimmung", "In C is one of the two great works of the 60s, reacting against the excessive drift of contemporary music, serial type Terry Riley wanted to reappropriate modern and traditional music, in especially those coming from the East.
By its incantatory side, "In C" is close to Indian music while remaining a founding work of minimalist music. It is from this Eastern root that the present interpretation has added a most pleasing vocal introduction, as well as tablas and sitar. We can feel it, the vocal ensemble of Montreal and the contemporary music society of Quebec under the direction of Walter Boudreau take an obvious pleasure in the execution of this amazing partition holding on a sheet. It's done in public, it's happy and deep. If the music seems less well defined than for a sound recording in the studio, as in the version of Paul Hillier, it does not prevent the energy is there, and very sensitive.
The two works of this disc by Donald Stevens and Michel-Georges Brégent are interesting but a degree below the major score of In C. To listen anyway with attention to the sound montages.
