Aside from Guitar Wolf, Teengenerate are the best-known Japanese garage act in the United States, and their savage beat gets proper LP attention with Get Action. The band blasts through a dozen sound-alike tracks with good-natured violence and electrical velocity, produced on the cheap and recorded in one sitting so that the whole mess sounds like a crackling mass of static through a dusty stylus. Sometimes the band gets lost in the murk, but more often they come through with sheer adolescent energy and sloppy R&B aplomb. Greasier than the Ramones, more youthful than the Pagans, Teengenerate blaze with a nearly hardcore fury but it always sounds like a party, even at their wildest. Like Guitar Wolf, Teengenerate have a fairly fractured sense of the English language, but their grasp of American Rock & Roll conventions is tighter than the surreal interpretation of the mighty Wolf, making for less idiosyncratic listening but more reliable dance action. "Dressed in Black" is the hit, an irresistible chant-along number with a chunky riff and pogo-ready rhythm. Other great tracks are the breakneck opener "Mess Me Up", the juicy power pop of "Right Now", and their nearly unrecognizable race through "Shake, Rattle & Roll". Guaranteed to leave xenophobic punks quaking in their American-made boots.

Teengenerate's second 10"… The sound running through these vinyl grooves is muddier than other TG recordings, but everything comes together nicely in a powerhouse of garage punk rock that will knock your socks off! The CD from 1996 features 2 extra tracks.

There is an argument to be made for Teengenerate as the best punk band of the late '90s. Of course some would elect New Bomb Turks or a California hardcore group, but Teengenerate was arguably more shunted and kersplatz than a gutter full of American punks. Like their Japanese counterparts, Guitar Wolf, they were brutal and pissed, that is of the essence. Savage, released on Sympathy for the Record Industry, was their American label follow-up to 1994's Let's Go to the Top. There's another debate to be had here, as to which is the best Teengenerate album, though really they're both of equal worth – which is to say they both sound like they were recorded on a reel-to-reel setup next to a fission reactor. Muddy and crunked as all that. Standout tracks include the incomparable "My GTO", probably the best single Teengenerate ever recorded, the passingly Black Flag-ish "Gonna Feel Alright", and the sonically violent "Wanna Drink". If you are going to buy one Teengenerate album, though, the singles collection put out by Estrus, Smash Hits, is recommended; it doesn't have "My GTO", but it does present a retrospective of the band's career.
