Ted Heath has been rightfully described as the biggest name in British swing music but he was much more than that. For many years the American bands and orchestras ruled the world of swing and dance music and it is somewhat ironic that at a time when big bands were beginning to take second place to the vocalists of the day, Ted should form an orchestra that rated such attention and adulation: from fans everywhere. This CD contains all of Ted's UK chart entries including 'Hot Toddy', 'Dragnet', 'Skin Deep' and 'Swingin' Shepherd Blues' as well as many other instrumental favourites and several of his vocalists' best remembered recordings including 'Allentown Jail', 'You Belong To Me' and 'Blacksmith Blues'.
Ted Heath was a Londoner, born in 1902, and showed an early interest in music. When his family were in poor financial straits after the First World War ended in 1918, Ted formed a band which busked around the streets until he was offered work in a London hotel band which also featured Jack Hylton. In 1920 Hylton formed his own band and offered Ted a job, and for the next two decades Ted's trombone could be heard playing with Hylton and other top bands, including those of Ambrose and Maurice Winnick.
He had ambitions to begin his own organisation but the money was not available, at least not until Ted and his wife, Moira, found success as songwriters. Royalties earned from 'That Lovely Weekend' ensured that the necessary finance was there to feed Ted's ambition. As early as 1942, while with Geraldo's Orchestra, Ted was to be heard on the radio fronting his own band, which was even then known as Ted Heath and His Music. However it was to be another three years before he had put together the band that he wanted, secured a record deal and was in a position to start playing ‘his music’ for swing lovers and dancers alike.
In a post-war Britain, the public was eager for as much entertainment as they could get and took the Heath band to their hearts. His fortunes were boosted in December 1945 when he came up with the idea of staging a monthly concert at the London Palladium. This series of Sunday concerts lasted for ten years and became a legend so fondly remembered down the years by the band’s many followers.
Alongside the instrumentals and swing favourites, Ted catered for the fans of the music of the day by hiring singers Dickie Valentine, Lita Roza and Dennis Lotis. Each of these vocalists, who all later had successful solo careers, can be heard with the Heath band on this CD.
They were also very successful in the USA and played there several times. On their debut tour in 1956 they appeared with Nat 'King' Cole, June Christy and The Four Freshmen. Reports say they were met by a 'tumultuous reception' and a top US critic noted, "In the commercial field at present this UK band have no rivals". In 1958, they came third in the American magazine Downbeat's poll, only being beaten by the bands of Duke Ellington and Count Basie.
In the late 1940s and throughout the 1950s Ted Heath's band and its vocalists won countless Melody Maker and NME awards, they had no equals in their homeland and this carefully chosen collection showcases the very best of Ted Heath & His Music.
