If what you want is a crackerjack coupling of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto and his First Piano Concerto, this disc is the one to get. With the ardently noble 1971 Nathan Milstein recording of the Violin Concerto with Claudio Abbado conducting the Vienna Philharmonic joined to the recklessly passionate 1973 Martha Argerich recording of the Piano Concerto with Charles Dutoit conducting the Royal Philharmonic, both performances are easily as good as the very best ever recorded.

Milstein's big tone, warm intonation, and awe-inspiring virtuosity are exactly what Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto needs, and Abbado's sympathetic conducting and the Vienna Philharmonic's colorful playing are just what Milstein needs.

Similarly, Argerich's huge tone, passionate interpretation, and breathtaking virtuosity are exactly what Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto needs, and Dutoit's supportive conducting and the Royal Philharmonic's accommodating playing are just what Argerich needs. While you may well already have favorite performances of these perennial favorites – perhaps the Heifetz for the Violin Concerto or the Horowitz for the Piano Concerto? – these performances are easily in the same exalted class, plus they have the advantage of being coupled. In both recordings, Deutsche Grammophon's stereo sound is essentially transparent.
