Just in time for the 2007 Holiday season, Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra record selections from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker for the GRAMMY Award-winning Telarc label. This family favorite is guaranteed to appeal to all ages!

The recording includes all the picturesque favorites from the popular Nutcracker ballet, including “Clara and the Prince,” the Spanish, Arabian, Russian and Chinese dances, “Waltz of the Flowers,” “Dance of the Prince and the Sugar Plum Fairy,” and the lilting Pas de deux from Acts I and II. Also included are scenes from the Act I First and Second Tableau such as “The Christmas Tree,” March, “Children’s Galop and Arrival of the Guests,” “Magic Spell Begins,” and “Waltz of the Snowflakes” (with the Cincinnati Children’s Choir directed by Robyn Lana).

"It's the most magical album to come along from the Cincinnati Pops in recent memory. Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have released an album of favorites from Tchaikovsky's most beloved ballet, "The Nutcracker," in time for the holidays.
This "Nutcracker" sparkles as much for the artistry of Cincinnati's musicians as for the wealth of Tchaikovsky's charming melodies that cascade forth, one after another…The Overture is a brilliant, scampering curtain-raiser, which in the ballet, opens on a Christmas party where Clara is presented with the gift of a nutcracker.
In the first tableau, "The Magic Spell Begins" accompanies that spectacular moment when the Christmas tree grows, the set falls away and Clara finds herself in a magical kingdom. Kunzel's view is adrenalin-charged, and the orchestral buildup is enthralling.
Orchestral soloists shine in the international dances of Act II: The high-wire trumpet solo in "Spanish Dance," the exotic "Arabian Dance," the bubbling flutes and piccolo in the "Chinese Dance" and an earthy Russian "Trepak."
