"I am now quite convinced that [Tarasova] is one of the leading cellists of her generation. She has a tone as rich as the best Bordeaux, and the sheer intelligence of her playing, particularly in Myaskovsky's frequent long-breathed cantabile passages, commands instant admiration: I knew within bars that I was in the presence of something special, for she really makes the instrument speak."
    Martin Anderson, CD REVIEW, 1994
The C.D.'s of Tarasova are so unknown. What a SHAME! It seems like people do not know how it works in the media. Who knows what is art??????? Listen to Tarasova!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! – Amazon
A soloist of the Moscow State Philharmonic Society, cellist Marina Tarasova was born in 1960. She studied at the Moscow Gnessin Special Musical School in the class of Professor Fedorchenko, and graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in the class of Professor N.Shahovskoy.

A laureate of the Tchaikovsky International Competition, Tarasova won First Prize at the Prague International Competition in 1975 and the Florence International Competition in 1979. She was also awarded the Grand Prix of the Paris International Competition in 1985. Her extensive repertoire includes almost all the standard works, with the music of Russian and Soviet composers Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Shnitke, and B.Tchaikovsky occupying a special place. Marina Tarasova concertizes as a member of symphony orchestras in the former USSR, and in Germany, Hungary, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Portugal, Finland, and Tunisia, under the batons of such conductors as G.Rojdestvensky and Y.Bashmet. She records for the Olympic and the Otto Preis labels.

Marina Tarasova's project of recording all the cello compositions of Carl Davidov (1838 -1889) - for the first time - focuses attention on the neglected work of the founder of the Russian cello school. Davidov's compositions are expressive and mellifluous, but due to their technical difficulty they have been performed infrequently and are thus little known. For 25 years, Davidov was a Professor at the St. Petersburg conservatory and its director for eleven. Tchaikovsky called him "the king of all the cellists" of Russia, and the critic, La Rachel, compared Davidov's playing in terms of "the accuracy and infallibility of a pianist…striking everyone with his exalted style and tone." Davidov and Liszt performed Rubinstein's Sonate for Cello in Weimar, and critics consider the performence to be historic. The way Davidov played the cello became a model for those who study music. Davidov composed four Concertos for Cello, the Allegro de Concert for Cello and Orchestra, and more than twenty-five other works for Cello and Piano, as well as arrangements of works by Beethoven, Schumann and others.

More recently, Ms. Tarasova has recorded three cello works by Nikolai Myaskovsky (1881-1950), an outstanding composer whose works, though fairly well known in Russia, are largely neglected elsewhere. A student of Rimsky-Korsakov at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, Myaskovsky joined the faculty of the Moscow Conservatory in 1921, where his students included Khachaturian and Kabalevsky. Myaskovsky was a prolific composer (he wrote 27 symphonies!!), and his music, though somewhat conservative in style, is celebrated for its deep expression and rich melodies, often indebted to Russian folksong. These qualities come out clearly in the works recorded here, and especially in the Cello Concerto; probably his best known work, Myaskovsky's Cello Concerto has been likened to that of Edward Elgar, in its emphasis on the cantabile qualities of the instrument, as well as in its overall elegiac mood.
