The Tallis Scholars: Frei Manuel Cardoso - Requiem

This release by the Tallis Scholars almost single-handedly rekindled interest (on the part of the public and other choirs) in the music of the late Portuguese Renaissance. Frei Manuel Cardoso's Requiem is modeled loosely on Victoria's famous work (both works are for six voices and place the traditional chant melody in the second soprano) but is much less solemn. The occasional surprising chromatic harmony and the major-key setting (as well as the luminous performance) make this funeral music seem radiant rather than morose. Closing the disc are some motets, more solemn in mood, and a smooth, buoyant Magnificat.
